The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

C'mon Divvy van! There was no driver in it either.

Wabash & Roosevelt? They're inside Starbucks. Happens all the time.

Yes, Wabash and Roosevelt around 10:30AM.

I've complained to Divvy SOOOO many times about their drivers blocking bike lanes and no luck in changing their training, performance etc. The most bike-unfriendly bike company ever.

They replied on Twitter:

Nice, glad they seem to have come around.

Dispatch Taxi yet again occupying the bike lane on Elston. Reported to 311.

22 S Wells St (Federal Reserve Bank). 311 and police report (assault) filed. I poked around the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago website, and there is no direct contact information. A little Googling allowed me to identify the Chief Operating Officer of the bank, who is likely the person in charge of the physical grounds and police force. I called her office, but she was out. I spoke with her administrative assistant, and asked that I get a callback from the head of security, and/or whoever is in charge of scheduling and unloading the armored trucks. I seriously doubt that I'll get a callback, but I'll follow up in a few days. In addition I filed a police report for the driver's verbal threat. Unfortunately I didn't get a photo of the side of the truck, so I don't know the company. However, I drive by there every weekday, so I'm sure I'll come across the truck with the lower orange paint job. Lastly, I've been planning to contact the alderman's office again. It's been a few months since I received a reply from my last letter, and I'd like to inform him, and the local police district commander, that there has been absolutely no change in the number of vehicles illegally parked. My next letter will definitely include the story about being threatened by the driver of the truck, and how the bank apparently doesn't give two sh*ts about endangering traffic on Wells St.

125 S Franklin St. 311 report submitted. So, while I'm taking the first photo, the driver starts to pull away. I snap the pick, and get back on my bike. At the next intersection I stop for the traffic light, turn around, and see that Mr. Dipsh*t has pulled back into the bike lane a few feet in front of his previous spot.

225 N Franklin St. 311 report submitted. Taxi 3222.

I drove past the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago on Well St this morning, and I'm happy to see that there was some progress. There were two armored trucks parked in the left lane, i.e. non-shared bike lane. This forced all traffic to attempt to merge into the shared lane. Of course, there was a delivery truck blocking the shared lane, so it was a total cluster f*ck. The delivery truck pulled away before I could reach it and snap a pic. Between the poor pavement, poor lighting, Quincy L renovation, and armored trucks, this is a bad stretch for motorists and cyclists alike.

Frankly, I have no frickin idea why the armored trucks can't find a legal place to park a block or two away (e.g. Franklin under the Congress Overpass), and wait for radio clearance to drive to the bank's scanning bay. I hear they have these new fangled inventions called radios and cell phones. Imagine that!

This guy was standing in the bike lane at 4588 N. Elston, IL N86 5986. Reported to 311.
