The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

We could trade!

The city closed the sidewalk on the south side of Washington between Clark and Dearborn, and posted a helpful sign instructing pedestrians not to walk in the "protected" bike lane.

So of course the entire lane is filled with pedestrians casually strolling side-by-side, impossible to pass due to the giant cement bus stop "protecting" cyclists.

There are sometimes CDOT Bike Ambassadors posted there during the AM rush. The ambassadors direct pedestrians up and onto the bus stop rather than walking on the bike lane. They are fairly effective when they are there, but they are not always there, and even when they are, some walkers slip through.

Ride slow, ring your bell and have patience. The construction or whatever that caused the sidewalk closure is not the fault of the pedestrians.

Snapped this the other day, coming back from lunch with a friend.

Walking in the bike lane certainly is the fault of the pedestrians. Looks like there originally was a "sidewalk closed" sign that later was supplemented by a second, larger sign that reads:
SIDEWALK CLOSED
DO NOT WALK IN BIKE LANE

Today, I watched numerous pedestrians stop, read the sign, and then casually stroll right down the middle of the lane.

I would totally be up for doing something like this in Chicago if it were to be organized. Although based on my experience, the reactions would not be so calm or contrite here.
