The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

This morning at the Bike to Work Rally at Daley Plaza, CDOT gave an award to the Department of Finance which has a team of ticket writers on bikes that issue tickets to cars parked in bike lanes.  Keep it up!

Team needs to be bigger.  Where do I sign up?  I'll single-handedly balance the city's budget by the end of summer.

This morning, I passed no fewer than a dozen vehicles parked in the bike lane, often right next to legal parking spaces.  About half of them were blocking parking "protected" lanes.

It's getting worse.

Mexican't restaurant on Harrison and Canal.

Every single day in the AM rush there's a minivan unloading at that darn restaurant. The other day I had a "conversation" with a man in a police SUV who said he was a sargeant or lieutenant or something and didn't have a ticket book but would "call it in".  This was after I had ridden in his path while taking the lane to avoid big rig in the bike lane on the north side across from the Post Office.  When I pulled back over into the bike lane I yelled out "That guy deserves a ticket." he sort of smiled.  In the next block was the guy in front of the restaurant and another vehicle as well. That time we both stopped at the red light and he opened his window when I gestured to him and I repeated my statement that they all deserved tickets.  He nodded and replied as above.

PS While riding in the city I generally stop at all red lights regardless of the presence of police (unless there is clearly NO traffic). I think it's a good practice to follow; in suburbs not necessarily.

Sounds like that popo could care less about peeps parked in the bike lane.

Yea I agree but I think  you meant "perps" not "peeps"! Ha Ha.

This spot is as bad as the post office with illegally parked cars in bike lanes.  I would be more surprised if you didn't see cars or trucks in the bike lane.

What's more infuriating is that there is actually an alley and a large parking lot just past these to grab and go restaurants for cars to park.  I've filed 311 reports and talked to drivers but they do not care.

And this morning, Budget had trucks parked in both the NB and SB bike lanes. I'm really fed up with this. Filed a 311 report, tweeted the alderman, and posted on the Budget Facebook page.

I reported those too this morning - I rode through around 6am and counted 3 in the inbound lane and 1 in the outbound lane.

Who is the alderman there?
