What Are Your Favorite Chicago-Area Bike Lanes, Paths & Routes?

Ok, now that we've been exploring the routes we avoid in the "Dreaded Bike-Unfriendly Streets", what are routes you prefer to take? Whether you are commuting, going for a weekend bike ride, or just heading to the grocery store, do you have some favorite bike routes?

The Mellow Chicago Bike Map Updated 6/20/18 - Collaboration of The Chainlink & Streetsblog

John gives a great recap of everything we've recommended in his article. Definitely worth a read!

Looks like you might have been inadvertently blacklisted on Disqus -- sorry about that. You should be able to post on Streetsblog now.

I bike through Bridgeport almost every day.  Wallace would be my last option.  It's by far the most dangerous street in the neighborhood.  It was designed with stop signs every block to encourage a slow pace past the many schools along that route, but that is absolutely NOT how motorists treat it.  Most of them speed, blow the stops signs at full speed, and barrel past pedestrians etc. who have the right away, even if a school crossing guard is stopping them.  CPD don't care and, in fact, are among the worst offenders. It's also a CTA bus route.

Halsted has a bike lane.  For a more chill experience, take literally any of the side streets.  The average speed on those is something like 10 MPH.  Several have cul-de-sacs and speed bumps.

Some E/W love: 67th/Marquette is a nice ride from Jackson Park to Pulaski at least (bike lane, not too much traffic, but also not so little that cars speed).

On Sunday mornings (I can't vouch for rush hour!), I love to ride out Roosevelt to Ogden, and take Ogden until I'm out of the city. It's a time warp, not just a slice of still-industrial Chicago but even the retail is a throwback (there's a video store!).

Bike lanes? F that, fam.  Weave in and out of traffic, through stop signs without looking, hop on and off of sidewalks and blow pedestrians out of the way!  We don't need no stinkin' bike lanes.  Our city, our right to the streets and sidewalk.  F the man and his rules.

RIGHT! That's really what we are all about. Maybe try to own and ride a bike on the streets of Chicago rather than coming here and ...

As I just said to Cooper's other comment, "Oh goody! It's TROLL time. SMH"

Going through that user's history, it appears nothing but a troll -- for a year.

Having said that, we all know very well he's not *entirely* wrong. Like it or not.

Neither of the threads he commented on are relevant to a conversation about cyclists and the laws. I'm happy to start a thread (or you are welcome to) on the topic because there are many of us that follow the laws and it's not a clear cut topic.

The Russian bots are attacking Chainlink now!  Oh, the humanity!

Are you serious?

Lake Shore Path... and Dearborn. Dearborn is a bit hairy during rush hour in the morning/evening. Been carrying the GoPro more often since I was grazed by a minivan last week.

Here's yesterday's footage leaving work: https://youtu.be/R34O4KoHXI8

And going to work this morning: https://youtu.be/cWbUdu6W-2Q

Favorite ride I try to do weekly is a loop of Green Bay Trail and N.Branch Trail from Uptown: www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/1334894167

John did a great follow up article on the Mellow Chicago Bike Map in the Chicago Reader. Worth checking out. Thanks to everyone for contributing their best routes and roads - he did a great job of incorporating our input. https://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/mellow-bike-map/Content?oid=5...
