The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

Old one: The Harolds Chicken food truck is still selling chicken in the "protected" bike lane in front of Northern Trust on Canal. It's there at least once/week. I've reported it to 311 several times.

New one: Some guy is distributing handbills while standing in the middle of the Washington "protected" lane near LaSalle. He tells every passing cyclist to "slow down," while the other pedestrians look at him like he's crazy.

Both of these put riders in danger. 911 could be in order.

so, this happened on my way to work this morning...

be paranoid out there. (and yes, my bad for being in the door zone at all, I should have seen that comming a mile away, luckily I stopped in time)

At 210 S DesPlaines, it's become routine to see cars parked in the bike lane.  I don't actually remember contacting Alderman Reilly.  I think I just filled out a 311 request.  I have also called 911 a few times.  In any case, thanks to the Alderman for responding!

Street View also caught this one on Dearborn, also from Oct 2016:

125 S. Franklin St. 311 report filed.

1850 W. Roosevelt Rd - 05/04/2017 @ 7:05 am

IL Z86 5792 (and IL E28 3761 with its rear end sticking out in the lane - an almost daily occurrence by this vehicle).

Yeah, that intersection became a big fat mess when they made it "safer." I believe they eventually put up orange cones to alert drivers not to turn using the bike lane. Still, cyclists have to be particularly alert moving through there, as drivers still tend to turn right without looking.

For the WIN! wow.

Cager lyfe :(
