The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

"it would be very difficult for the office to enforce a law that would put that business into difficulty"

...because then the business owner might stop making regular, large "contributions" to the alderman.

Maurice,  we all realize this may occur.

Take a moment - I am trying to positively interact with the Alderperson and her office and so far everyone is talking and taking steps.  Possibly also reading this site.  I do not think we should start publicly throwing mud.

Saw a semi parked in the Wells St. lane in Old Town today with not one, not two, but three fresh tickets taped to the driver's window. Certainly brightened my morning.

So. I see stuff in the bike lane all the time, but often I'm too in a rush to stop and take a picture. Sometimes I will take a picture and then I forget to post it here. Or it'll be too blurry anyway upon review.

Today just a short while ago I'm biking down randolph over the bridge between clinton and canal and I see a car in the bike lane with a passenger door open and the driver and passenger are out on the bridge taking touristy photos. I pull over and take a picture of their car. The driver comes back and asks me why. I explain "because you're in the bike lane and there's a website where people post pictures of stuff in bike lanes". The guy was perfectly nice about it and apologized and said he didn't realize it was a bike lane. So I'm not posting the picture.

But then I'm on hubbard in between ogden and ashland and there's another car in the bike lane. I pull over and take a picture. I bike on thinking nothing of it. On hubbard between ashland and damen she catches up to me and slows down and rolls down her window so I pull over.

She is much less nice about it. I explain the same thing. She says "I wasn't parked I was making a delivery". Then she says my taking a picture of her car is an "invasion of privacy" and is "weird as f***"

When I try to explain that she has no reasonable expectation of privacy when in public and illegal parked, she goes off on an expletive laced tirade.

She says she's going to get a ticket over this and I say no you wont. But that picture is going on the chainlink. To which she responds over and over "f*** your website" as she drives off.

So yeah I'm definitely posting this one.

Edited to add: I'm not sure why the picture only loads as an attachment which has to be clicked instead of just opening. But hopefully it works for everyone.

Hahaha. That's great. The Chainlink. Where motorists say, "F*** your website!"

There's a little photo icon to the right of "Link" that allows you to embed photos.

Lol! Hmm. I'm not seeing it. Here's what I see.

V W, to imbed a pic from your smartphone to a discussion post, press the bottom left side button on your smartphone, click on desktop view, then click the icon(photo)to the right of link icon. Then load a pic from your pic gallery. Use trial and error and you'll eventually get it like I did.

Thanks Tom!

Nice. Busted out grill, license plate hanging by one bolt and cracked up bumper cap - I'm going to take a wild guess and say that the driver has a, shall we say less than exemplary driving record.

Lol! Also if I recall correctly the other sides of the car weren't much cleaner. And looking at the picture now, also what looks like a puddle forming under the car.
So if she was aware that she could be ticketed, she parked in the bike lane why, again?
She probably realized what we think when we see someone run a red light: a cop is never around when you need one.
