The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

While filing the 311 report, I used Google Street View to look at the address on the building on North Franklin. Lol. There's a taxi illegally parked in the bike lane at 221 N Franklin St. Classic.

The driver was very sorry, of course. She probably didn't see the green paint or lane dividers.

Elston Car Washes.

Last Friday I rode past the Car Washes on Elston between Montrose and Lawrence, each had 10+ cars queuing in the bike lanes and one was actively washing cars whilst they blocked the bike lane and sidewalk.  I popped into Alderwoman Laurino's office to ask if there has been any progress re their promise to get city inspectors to see this issue.

Her office staff were very welcoming.  I talked with a staffer who pointed out that it would be very difficult for the office to enforce a law that would put that business into difficulty - they need cars to queue.  When I suggested the removal of paid parking spots to have a loading zone which could be used as a safer queueing location they were pretty interested and would have no problem telling a business to pay a couple of hundred dollars a year.

They promised to look into the matter further and bring it to the attention of the 17th(?) Precinct CPD.

They would also be interested in hearing more about how other Wards have dealt with similar issues.

Does anyone have anything to share?

Is anyone willing to approach their own Alderpeople with similar issues - if you do we will be more successful if we can offer solutions.

Cheers.

The fly in that ointment is the city's parking meter contract which requires that every meter removed must be matched with a new meter elsewhere. That contract privatizing the meters was a sweetheart deal pushed through the council without any alderman questioning it nor apparently having even read it...

i hope the issue with the carwash will be resolved in a favourable manner, but i wouldn't hold my breath. All the same, Good Luck!

Thanks for being so proactive on this! I'm glad to hear the staff was receptive. It seems fair (to me at least) that if a business expects to use public road space for customers to queue in, a fee is paid. I wonder if there is a way to leave the meters and have the business pay the equivalent of using them during business hours?
