Ouch! Sorry to hear this happened. Thanks for sharing your research. 

So hard to judge a puddle so it's usually best to assume the worst. I try to sit up and off my saddle and grip my handlebars when I am bracing for a bump or drop. If really deep, I try to put my weight back so that I don't go over my handlebars.

I tend to take similar precautions if I can't avoid a bump or drop. I make a habit of standing on the pedals for railroad crossings and other bumpy spots.

Sorry to hear about your injury. I'm not a female, I never ride through unknown puddles! You never how deep it is. 

Ow! Glad it was not worse or if you had man parts who knows what world of pain you would have encountered. Which reminds me of a joke from Betty White.
