Northwestern student bicyclist killed this afternoon on Sheridan Road

Very sad and particularly upsetting to the Northwestern community:   details are still sketchy this evening, but the Northwestern student newspaper is reporting an 18-year student was killed in a accident this afternoon with a cement truck on Sheridan Road bordering campus.

First: what a terrible bummer, and my condolences to loved ones. Second: what a terrible article. Pretty much zero information about the "accident" but of course the obligatory helmet status. Where is "Northwestern Place"?

Don't bother reading the version on the Tribune. They've already "assumed" what took place and guess who wasn't at fault?

You warned me but I did it anyway. That author takes writing in the passive voice to new levels. Too bad Evanston Police Chief Knows-it-all couldn't be as dispassionate.

"Northwestern Pace" is basically the two lane road-in-the-parking-lot that is the main mid-campus entrance to the university.   A stoplight was put at that entrance to campus in 2011, but the intersection is still a dangerous mix of cars, pedestrians, bicyclists, and skateboarders.

It is illegal to ride on the sidewalk and perfectly legal to ride without a helmet. And yet, of course, no citation issued for the cement truck driver. No charges. And an 18 year old woman lost her life. It is so hard to read these. And it's yet another commercial driver. Enough is enough.

Best Bike City 2016. Would having this honor revoked due to the abysmal safety record and lack of enforcement (even in cases of death) catch the city's attention to start taking this seriously? What in the hell is going on here? Taking photos daily and calling out drivers isn't really helping.

They never took it away from NYC; and this feels a lot like the typical "no criminality suspected" NYPD response.

First of all I would like to pay my respects and condolences to the deceased family and friends. Another young cyclists' life needlessly lost. May she rest in peace.

Secondly, I feel that we have to once again, refresh and remind the media on the proper way to fairly and impartially cover an incident or tragedy involving a cyclist. Blame or innocence should not be declared by any authority to the press. That determination has to be sorted out later.

The news media should know better by now, but it is currently in a state of decline.
