The Chainlink

Saw this on the PBL at Kinzie and Wells this afternoon (7/5/2016).  Is there anything we can do about it, like report it to CDOT or something?

The restaurants are not yet open.

Agreed. I've considered talking to the management at the restaurants but I doubt they will care.

Here's the taxi belong to the nice gentleman who was parked in the bike lane at the cab stand on Grand/Rush.  Taxis here always park illegally.

When I told him I would report him he said "I don't care; they won't do anything."

Yes, and making a complaint against a taxi is extremely difficult. It requires filling out two sets of forms, and the process takes 6 months to complete.

It is a redundant pain for sure. However they are now at least allowing you to email in the signed affidavit instead of faxing or mailing it as was previously required.

And for what it's worth, when I've sent in well-supported reports (i.e. with photos), I always get a letter stating that the drivers record has been noted with the citation. Who knows if this actually means anything, but maybe (?) there is some record somewhere and if enough people report the same drivers action might be taken against them.

I got the same response. I don't think this is an effective way to get them to stop parking in the bike lane.

Thanks, I tweeted the pic and location.

Response (link for reporting the taxi):

thanks a lot for tweeting that Yasmeen! Every day the taxis at that cab stand are in the bike lane. I have complained to the hotel's GM but he says it's up to the CPD to enforce the laws.

What I'd like him to do is not let any drivers pick up who are in the bike lane.

Making bikers here move out of the bike lane is quite dangerous here as cars are flying on this stretch.

What hotel is it? If I have businesses to copy in my tweet, sometimes they respond positively.

It's the Marriott...their lower entrance on Rush (not on Michigan Avenue. Take a look at the photo below....even the day when Google Maps photo'd the block there was illegal parking - marked in red. Note that the cab stand is on Rush in front of entrance and wraps around Grand. Desperate for airport fares the cabs park in the bike lane at the end of the cab stand on Grand (they are no longer in the cab stand obviously). Grand is one way going west btw.

I have been battling these cab drivers for two years and have called cpd many times. No luck.

Two ideas:

1)  Could we get the cab stand removed on Grand?

2)  Could the hotel doorman come out, find offenders, and refuse to let them pick up?

I just realized that the fine is $150 for not just parking but even idling in the bike lane. What I see more and more is people just sitting in their car, texting, etc.  I thought you had to be parked (out of the car) to trigger a ticket. The law is actually tougher than that.
