My birthday is on Monday, and I'm taking the day off for a bike ride. I'm thinking 80-100 miles, leaving from Oak Park around 8 am, returning before/around dinner time. My current thought is to go…Continue

I'm tooling away only way to work this morning, and next thing I know, I'm stuck behind a street sweeper on the Prairie Path! That certainly put a smile in my face.

I hit a bump or pothole on my celebratory spring ride this afternoon, and immediately noticed that my rear wheel had significantly more drag, about five miles from home.  Once I had it home,…Continue

Tim Heckman replied to Tomek's discussion 20-30 miles West Suburbs/Chicago Road Bike Route
"My statement wasn't exactly clear-- sorry, but don't want to confuse anyone. The section between 135th Street (Romeoville) and the Joliet Ironworks is substantially crushed stone with isolated paved sections. The secetion north of 135th…"

Tim Heckman replied to Tomek's discussion 20-30 miles West Suburbs/Chicago Road Bike Route
"It is crushed limestone SW of Joliet, but the section between Willow Springs Road and IL 83 is paved. Also, the trailhead of the North Branch is just up at Devon and Nagle. That's another nice trail that gets plenty of traffic."

Tim Heckman replied to Tomek's discussion 20-30 miles West Suburbs/Chicago Road Bike Route
"This one isn't bad. It is a loop between the Salt Creek, and the Prairie Path that is 25 miles from my place in Oak Park. Hop off the Prairie Path where it goes to crushed stone in Berkeley and follow Vallette Street to the west edge of…"

Tim Heckman replied to Jeff Schneider's discussion Worst Amateur Bike Mechanic Ever?
"I have a story that is close-- I am somewhat embarrassed by it. I have two Schwinn Suburbans. At least part of my rationale for that is so I can learn to mechanic on the one that is not being actively ridden. First thing this spring, I broke the…"

"Hey paulcycles, do I know you, at least by sight? I'm usually riding a blue or brown Suburban west in the morning, and east in the evening-- sometimes you will see me on a black Cross Check. I'm usually wearing a safety vest while…"

Tim Heckman replied to Chitown_Mike's discussion Getting to Downers Grove (McCullom park)
"It's a really good route. I didn't look up the park you mentioned, and thought your destination was about four miles north. Your willingness to ride 25th also indicated a moderately high traffic tolerance. I've ridden most all of…"

Tim Heckman replied to Chitown_Mike's discussion Getting to Downers Grove (McCullom park)
"No, although I think Roosevelt Road, 22nd/Cermak, Mannheim Road, Illinois 83, and Butterfield SW of Cermak are inappropriate in my opinion. I don't like Ogden, but some people do in the early mornings."

Tim Heckman replied to Chitown_Mike's discussion Getting to Downers Grove (McCullom park)
"At that time, 25th would be fine from Madison Street to 31st, and then just take 31st over. For a little more sedate ride, you can use Washington through Maywood/Bellwood from Thatcher/1st to Bellwood Avenue (which becomes Westchester Boulevard…"

Tim Heckman replied to Chitown_Mike's discussion Pic of your commuter
"Hmm... I have two. The everyday commuter is one of my trusty Schwinn Suburbans. She was born the same year and month that I was. Sometimes, I'll commute on my new Cross Check."
