"If you're going to be doing long distances on the lakefront often, it's nice to have some kind of road bike or cyclocross bike with drop handlebars to be low and more aerodynamic on windy days.  This doesn't really fit with the…"

"If you want an affordable vintage bike, I'd check our A Nearly New Shop in Lakeview or Hoard Antiques in Ravenswood. I purchased my first non-childhood bike at Nearly New, and they gave me great advice about city riding.…"

"Riding home I remembered the other half of this tip: puncture resistant tires are the way to go.  I like Vittoria Randonneur Pros, but there are plenty of good brands to pick from.  There is enough glass and stuff around to make them worth…"

"+1. This doesn't quite sound "right," but I'll get blasted with you Joel. "

"I might get blasted for this, but don't get tires any narrower than 28mm.  Ideally, go 32mm or even bigger.  The city is covered in potholes and the open grate bridges would be even more terrifying on anything narrower."

"Your best bet is just go around to bike shops and see what you like.  Chicago is flat and paved, so you don't really need to go for a Yeti SB66.  My daily ride is a hardtail mountain bike that I got for a few hundred dollars off of…"

"So, to recap, I need a vintage Batcycle with a wool suit for winters. ;)   In all seriousness, you're going to make this transition way too easy."

"Another non bike tip:  its a lot colder here then in Indianapolis.  Invest in a wool coat with a hood and stock up on wool socks.   You will be amazed how much colder and longer the winter is just a few hundred miles away."

"Not a tip on bikes, but be sure to get good locks.  Cables and cheap chain won't cut it here.  Be sure to lock your frame and both wheels somehow.  If the bike has a quick release saddle, get rid of the quick release or lock it…"

"a folding bike would be another great option with less hassles putting on buses, trains, or planes. the peace of mind knowing that your vehicle is secure (stashed under your desk) as most buildings will allow you to take them in with you."

"Chicago is a nice flat place so a 3-speed bike can work quite well.  There are many people riding around on single-speeds so 3 speeds is almost extravagant.    There are many companies today building 3-speed bikes and the 3-speed…"

"If you are looking for a used bike. Working Bikes 2434 S. Western ave (Workingbikes.org) has a good selection of used beach cruisers and older 3 speed/single speed cruisers."
