"Interesting but very foolish - the 11 goes through a few wards. Definitely an interesting contrast to the original "party line" that due to the Brown Line expansion project that bus was a redundancy.  For active, younger folks a few…"

"Whatever this morning's weather was metric-wise, it gets my vote.  A light wind to keep the air feeling fresh, clear and sunny, and the lake was beautiful beyond belief!"

Carter O'Brien replied to PFEggs's discussion 'Accident on Lincoln Ave'
"I agree and also avoid that stretch between Armitage & Wells, but just curious, what don't you like about the strip between Lakewood and Southport? That always seemed fairly tame to me, but I don't take Lincoln that much anymore, maybe…"

Carter O'Brien replied to Gene Tenner's discussion 'Mayor wants to increase fines for reckless cyclists, motorists'
"California.  I've heard from a wide number of people across the state that they do ticket pedestrians, which means less jaywalking, which apparently leads to cars respecting the crosswalks and stopping for pedestrians in them. I'm…"

Carter O'Brien replied to Gene Tenner's discussion 'Mayor wants to increase fines for reckless cyclists, motorists'
"btw, germane to this discussion is the fact that today I almost got forced into the path of a car - by another bloody cyclist!  I was already dealing with the leap-frogging Belmont traffic (curse you, "rush hour parking controls")…"

Carter O'Brien replied to Gene Tenner's discussion 'Mayor wants to increase fines for reckless cyclists, motorists'
"I don't disagree, I was just noting that debate over the interpretation/definition of statistics is quite old and well-established, and that might contribute to why such obvious connections still don't register with the larger…"

Carter O'Brien replied to Gene Tenner's discussion 'Mayor wants to increase fines for reckless cyclists, motorists'
"Here's the classic on the subject, originally published in 1954.  I had a stats class in college that dedicated several chapters to this book/the concept: http://www.amazon.com/How-Lie-Statistics-Darrell-Huff/dp/0393310728"

Carter O'Brien replied to Gene Tenner's discussion 'Mayor wants to increase fines for reckless cyclists, motorists'
"These stats show what % of bike crashes result in injury or death, but do not indicate what number or % of bike rides  involve a crash in the first place. Without that, this data adds little to our understanding except "getting in a crash…"

Carter O'Brien replied to Gene Tenner's discussion 'Mayor wants to increase fines for reckless cyclists, motorists'
"Sadly, this is true.  I really can't recall the last time I saw a car pulled over for a traffic violation, which I struggle to understand given that those tickets are seem what a major untapped revenue source. Ticketing the worst behaving…"

Carter O'Brien replied to Gene Tenner's discussion 'Mayor wants to increase fines for reckless cyclists, motorists'
"Well put. I'd add that it is also a long overdue *official* reminder that when a driver or passenger is opening a car door into traffic, ANY accidents with ANY moving vehicles are their fault. This isn't just about dooring bikes, many…"

Profile Information

What I ride:
Mountain, Hybrid
The kind of riding I do:
Recreational, Exercise, Commuting, Around Town
About me:
I'm 40, and have been an avid cyclist in the City since at least 4th grade. I now live just SE of Belmont & Kimball.

Having spent 95% of my life between Diversey & Belmont on the north side (lived first around the Elbo Room, then Diversey & Damen) has given me a pretty time-tested perspective on the challenges of heading straight east to the Lakefront as well as those using the Elston or Milwaukee (or hybrid routes) for my commute over the past 14 years to the Field Museum.
