Hello fellow cyclist.
I figure this would be a good place as any to post this.
Robert's Cycles in Rogers Park is looking for a female mechanic.
Need not be an expert but she needs to know how to handle tools and do basic maintenance.
Robert's Cycles is located at
7054 North Clark Street
Chicago, IL 60626
Ask for Richard
Sorry for posting on so many groups but I figure if You are or know some one I might as well throw this out there

When your old ass has to climb that hill, you will appreciate them gears.

I have been experimenting with indexing old road bikes as simple 5- or 6-speeds as simple alternative to friction shifting. I have some discontinued Shimano SIS 6-speed shifters and also some SRAM 5- and 6-speed twist shifters compatible with Shimano freewheel spacing. I tried indexing an 80s Schwinn World with the SRAM shifter, the bike's original Shimano derailleur, and a 5-speed freewheel - no dice. Then I tried the SIS shifter with the same derailleur and a Shimano 6-speed freewheel, also without success. Then I subbed in a super cheap Shimano SIS RD from a scrapped department store bike, and voila, the World is an indexed 6-speed with very smooth shifting.

"I got a word of advice for all of you hipsters,
go get yourselves some brakes and some shifters."

That rap video is still funny.

After evaluating how/where I ride, I converted my daily from 3x7 to a 1x6 with tweaked ratios. This simpler set up is actually more efficient. Don't need more but can't do with less.

Tell you what though, sometimes simple is more bang for the buck since you devlop handling skills and techniquie that overshadows gearing options and translates well when you are on a 27 or 30 speed beast

Have a bit of everything. Single speed, 1X7, 2X9, 3X7, 3X8, 3X9. Can one ever have too many gears? That's like asking how many bikes is the right amout to own? For me you can never have too many gears or rides. HAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
