New rider on pitching a tent - question about IL State Beach camping

Hello! Thanks to great advice from Chainlinkers myself and a group of friends are heading up to IL State Beach for an overnight trip Saturday. Only problem is... I did not get a reservation. By the time I called for one, all the reservations were taken.

They told me the walk-in and non-reservable spots don't usually fill up until 5-6pm, then there is also the chance of no-shows.

Has anyone else chanced it before? Hoping you had good luck?

We are leaving the city 9-10am, so will be up there around 1. Hoping for the best & excited!

plan for 5 hrs to get there. there is usually something available. we went two or three weeks ago and there were plenty of available spaces. Worst case scenario, metra back.

What is the route you took ?

We took the North Channel Trail to the Green Bay Trail to the Robert McClory Bike Path then off the path and east to the park.

Great first trip! Going down the hill to the park entrance was sublime. Started with 7 people, only me and my girlfriend made the trip back though (we were really proud of ourselves).

Campground was full when we go there but fortunately we were able to finagle a spot and a group of lady riders from Roger's Park offered to share their spots if we had not been able to get one otherwise.
