Frozens' Not Century 2013 Planning Group

Ride 100 miles in February?  Sure, but only if it's in Wisconsin!

Picking a date, choosing a rough route, then an event page and spreading the word.

A word about spreading the word--this ride is for seasoned winter riders who've assembled their gear carefully over several seasons.

Ok, who's in?

So what is the date again?

Amongst the group one or two tires for fubar to cold to wait for ride on shoulder and of course duct tape oh why not even more brandy or whiskey!

I learned a few things and just wanted to post a couple things to help others.

  • Front and rear derailleurs will freeze if you don't use them enough to stop ice build-up; same with brakes. Use 'em or loose 'em. Give yourself ample stopping time and keep this in mind.
  • Fenders may clog with snow/ice, even if you have generous clearances. You may not even realize it...
  • I highly suggest waterproof shoe & glove covers. Even shopping bags. I'd rather look like a crazy bum dressed in garbage bags while retaining feeling in my digits. I wore spats in 2011 and even then my "waterproof" boots still were soaked. I'm bringing gators this year. It's probably even more important to keep your gear dry with an overnight stay and ride the following day.
  • It nice to let the slowest riders lead the group so everyone stays together.
  • Bring lights with enough wattage so you'll be able to see the road. Headlamps will help you to read street signs.
  • Bring a variety of snacks!!! cookies, eggrolls, brandy, jerky, chips, apples.
  • also: Goggles, advil, cash, spare tube, pump

Okay, that is all. Feel free to add anything!

I'm seriously looking forward to this ride!

In rural Wisconsin, every hardware store sells brandy, and every liquor store sells pipe clamps, beef jerky, and hand warmers. :)

I'm a pretty firm yes for mass weekend, as long as nothing big comes up.

Have we collectively decided to focus on Mass weekend only? Fine with me, if so I will pencil it in....

I think 2011 set the bar pretty high;  Spending too much time at Stonefly Brewery, lack of lights, tennis shoes, steady snowfall, changing the route to farm roads to try to get back to Kenosha in time, and a couple of bonks.  Thank goodness for that liquor/hardware store we found around 6pm is all I can say.

In case that doesn't sound like a great time, it was!

I'm flexible on the date - it doesn't appear I'll be taking any out-of-town trips in February - but I can't take a Friday off. I'd prefer a non-Friday-containing ride, but if it does begin on a Friday I can always just do the return leg.

Nothing's set yet, anybody else care to weigh in on the date?

'11 was a small crew and some weren't as prepared, true. We all made it alive, but it got dodgy during the last couple of hours. I've been saying that this is not a ride for anyone who hasn't got a couple of winters of steady riding under the belt.

Due to new-job commitments I'm probably 50% whether it's overnight or not...

When I went did the ride in '11 we had a wide range of peeps with a wide range of experience and preparation. Things got a little cray, IMO. Should we have a discussion about how to prepare/what to expect during the frozen snot ride?
