Im looking for feedback on a possible route for Oct.

I understand that there might be some other ideas floating around, and that things are being kept hush hush. That's cool I can dig it. I'm just looking for feedback on this route that I have thrown togeather. Here's my route: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4112010

If your wondering why I would try a route that looks pretty FUBAR, its because I'm basing it off a pentagram with Goose Island in the center. Here's the line route with it continuing on back to Daily Plaza:http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4111937

The Points on the pentagram are: Daily Plaza, DePaul University, Union Park, Chicago Historical Museum, and Wicker Park. There is no reason for these being the points other than they were just far enough apart and that Goose Island happend to be right in the middle.

Like I said, i might try to push for this or might not, I'd just like to hear some pros and cons from this route.

Dig the star theme. Very smooth overlap. I have never been to a mass that ended back up at the plaza.

I Think that most people would break off at wicker park cuz we're already pushing 17 miles at that point. I figure if people wanted, we'd probably make it up on the way back to the plaza.

That would be cool as well. I've always liked the Idea of doing a mass where there is no set route but several Landmarks that should be crossed (in or out of order). In a perfect world, people within the larger mass would try different ways to get to those points. Then these mini-masses would unite for a short stretch on to the next point of intrest.

I'm Curious what people that have made maps in the past think. What works and what doesn't? I don't think that I'll have time to make fliers or really want to lead this next week.

I've made a few maps . . .
What works:
-avoids major bus routes for the most part (thank you!)
-built around points of interest

What doesn't work:
-Starting northbound on Dearborn typically plunges us into a lot of congestion and can kind of kill the start if the riders in front try to thread through stopped traffic.
Also likely to get hijacked toward Michigan Avenue (always seems like a great idea to everyone until we're stuck up-in-it.)
-as someone alluded, it's hard to get the mass to go south once you've gone north.

This reminds me a lot of a Halloween ride designed by Digital Dan around 2003 that had a concentric/geometric route which kept crossing back into the loop. I remember it as a great ride but boy did it ever get decimated in listserv rehash (often the sign of a truly great route :-)
We had a holdup on 90/94 near the Adams exit that ride and brought all lanes to a stop.

Davo, I applaud you for this initiative and hope you forge ahead regardless of what anyone else may be planning.

Not sure how we got to "the map" as if there an only be one "official" map. Anyone can bring and distribute a map any time. If it's easy to read and otherwise compelling in some way (cute graphics, strong concept, attractive destination) people you don't know will get to the front and see that it's followed.
