Ride of Silence - May 18, 2016 - One day. One time. World wide.

Join the annual Ride of Silence, an organized annual cycling procession honoring those that have been injured or killed. The goal is to raise awareness that we are here, and to ask that we all share the road.

Save the date for the 2017 Chicago Ride Of Silence - May 17, 2017

Our route typically passes several Ghost Bikes, which are powerful memorials to fallen cyclists created by painting a bicycle white and placing it at or near the site of the cyclist’s death.

H3N3 - Where is the Bikewinter Swap Meet? I think it would be beneficial... and maybe some volunteers will come forward to help out at the first planning meeting, too...

Elizabeth-- do you (on behalf of Chicago ROS) have any use for the opportunity to table at the Feb 6 Bikewinter Swap Meet and Urban Bike Expo?

Any one interested in making and planning some kind of rolling float display for the May 19th ride?
I'm thinking of a non-motorized float that would be pulled by about 10 or more bicyclist.
It could have one big coffin with pictures of killed cyclists on it.
Or maybe many little coffins with pictures of broken bikes on each.

Maybe signs like:
We ARE Traffic!
We are NOT in your way!
Stop killing us!

Are these to strong? Is it better to have no words?
What do you think?

Hi Rik,
The local print and broadcast media is alerted to the event via press releases and personal contacts and we tend to get the usual suspects (the ones that are actually interested in what the "community" is doing)-- probably as much media bopping around at the last ROS as one would wish.
Things can get a bit touchy when you're organizing around people's deaths, so it would be best to avoid any perception that a cause is "using" people's deaths to fuel its advocacy.
Did you see Elizabeth on Chicago Tonight last year? She was great . . .

Let's plan some kind of official Press conference at the start of the ride in 2010. We could do a presentation to raise awareness to the public and ourselves!
If we do it right we will get on some major media.

I just finished designing three 2010 Calendars: Chicago Flowers, Chicago Scapes and Chicago Bikes, available at

Happy Bike Winter!

All proceeds benefit the Chicago Ride of Silence and safe biking in Chicago.

In honor of the tragic death of Liza Whitacre:

A memorial ride is planned for Sunday evening --
"It takes off at 7pm from Metropolis Coffee (1039 W Granville Ave) and will follow her route to Liza's spot at the corner of Wellington and Damen by Hamlin Park in Roscoe Village. All are welcome."

Sadly, this is why we will continue to ride in unity for all fallen cyclists.
