Just starting Nov. 8 2010 - the Hiawatha Service between Chicago and Milwaukee. Six trains daily, 7th Mon-Sat.

But NO CARRY ON BIKES, like the Illinois Service Routes, http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?c=AM_Route_C&pagena...

All of these train routes are subsidized by the state of Illinois - why can't they all accommodate carry-on bikes?

Or Van Galder bus all the way, every hour from O'Hare to Milwaukee. Metra to Kenosha, then a ride to Milwaukee isn't bad.

You can carry-on a bike on the Metra to Kenosha, then on the Van Galder bus to Milwaukee.

As of now bicycles on the train to Milwaukee must be boxed and checked.

Are there trains going to or from Milwaukee that accept carry-on bicycles now?

As a member of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, I can get behind a well-thought-out train design that allows bicycles. Moreover, Milwaukee's Intermodal Station is getting a redo of the train shed to allow disabled and biking passengers to board the trains with more ease. The Americans with Disabilities Act also helps bikers.

Looking at the car sets that have been designed for other mid-west high speed train lines, carry-on bicycle service may actually improve.

High speed rail means less people driving and flying which is better for our environment. For people with family in St. Louis or who go for work this is a good thing.

" The motor coach substitution may mean no bikes for that segment of track, so double check before planning a trip. While it sucks that a good service will be shut down for a while, it’s nice to see a serious commitment to high speed rail. "

Yes, but will the high-speed rail accommodate carry-on bicycles? It's doubtful.

As a slow-moving cyclist, I'm not at all impressed or support high-speed rail. The present rate is fast enough, it's paid for, and doesn't require a huge investment.

Would you want to encourage highways for high-speed automobile traffic as well?

Just saw this on the crazy guy forum and thought it's kind of neat...though a little heavy: http://cgi.ebay.com/B-RV-Bicycle-Cargo-Flatbed-Trailer-Camper-/2506...
