Bike Geeks

Cyclist I.T. Nerds.  Group to support Julie with TheChainLink.org technical consulting and maintenance, and to develop a pool of programmers and web developers for local cycling projects.

Inspired by the extraordinarily high ratio of I.T. Professionals I've met on rides, the ongoing discussion about TCL and Ning, and the urgent need for help with BikeGeeks.org projects.

If you are a cyclist, and have I.T. skills, please join this group to begin what could become some productive networking.

This is working well!  Still missing a few I invited.  Do invite those you know please.

PHP capable coders, please join the BikeGeeks.org mailing list (may not be the same as joining the site).  Sending subscribe to chibikegeeks@bikegeeks.org may work.

Todd Gee, incredibly, stays off social networks, so its hard to know there's a BikeGeeks.org meeting in Logan Square every Thursday with beer and pizza even.
His latest mailing, planning this Thursday's gathering, constructively lists all the big hot (Drupal-heavy) projects.

So if you wanna help ChicagoCriticalMass.org or ChicagoBikeShops.info or BikeWinter.org etc go join the BikeGeeks.org mailing list, and contact Todd for location, etc.
Logan's Sq is far for me, so I never go.  WebCast would be nice...

Hello fellow Geek Riders :)

I'm mostly a software guy, usually in Ruby and now a lot more in iOS (iPhones / iPads).  I've done projects from "Enterprise" Java apps to Wordpress blogs.  I'm comfortable in Ruby, Javascript, and HTML but have done enough Java, Python, Objective C to get around.  PHP makes me want to poke my eyes out, but, it'll do in a bind.

There's lots of information out there on migrating from Ning to Drupal. But, yes, I'd be surprised if people didn't have to re-register as I doubt Ning is going to allow you to access members' passwords in any form, hashed or not.

CONFIRMED!  http://chaosbrewclub.net has *JUST* migrated from Ning to Drupal 7, including Users and Forums.  They're the first I've ever heard of, and local!  We need to find out who did it and how.

I'm not an IT geek by any means, but yes, CHAOS migrated over from Ning.  All members have to reregister I believe.  Check out their new site here.

I do a little of a lot.

I am well versed in hardware...large and small scale operations. I've repaired screens on phones, and installed miles of fiber lines around the country.

I'm knowledgeable in HTML5, CSS3, PHP, Javascript, Java, SQL...and a little C#. I'm learning some Python for fun. I'm also currently taking an Android Development course that finishes in January.

I am a systems guy working primarily with VMWare and storage these days (Compellent, Equallogic, and EMC).  I have been a generalist for many years with primary experience with Windows servers and the Microsoft suite of server applications.  Also have experience with networking.  When working with Linux most of my experience is with CentOS/RedHat and Ubuntu.

I currently work downtown and regularly commute by bike from Skokie from March to October.  Winter months I bike to the train, conditions permitting.  I am a member of the bike center in Millennium Park.

Greetings programs!

Be encouraged to post introductions here.

I'd like to know everyone's skills.

I'm a "graybeard", having spent decades in embedded C and Pascal (even years in Cobol).  But after Al Gore invented the Internet I went LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) and Drupal.  In recent years I've become pretty good at GIS(GPS/KML) coding.
See my hyper resume.

YOUR TURN!

Greetings programs!
I've surely missed inviting a dozen others who I regularly run across on marauders for example, but aren't friends with here yet.  Please all, invite other geeks.

Two in particular I don't want to miss:

1. I hear a Justin is working on the BikeWinter.org site. Is he on TCL?

2. Julie just forwarded an email about chaosbrewclub.net porting off of Ning.  They're Chicago right?  With some cyclist overlap?  Anyone know who's doing that work?
