OK, for 2011 I want to build a clone of the venerable Pashley Guv'nor for less than 1500 bucks.  The three speed Guv'nor goes for about $1800.

 

Please make recommendations for frames.  I'd prefer it be a Raleigh capable of fitting 700C wheels.  Don't worry about brake fitment because it will have Sturmey Archer internal brakes like the Guv'nor.  A Carlton 531 frame would be nice if one could be acquired.  For me it needs to be no bigger than 22 inches (55-56 cm is ideal).

Your basic 21" Raleigh Sports frame would be an ideal candidate, size and angle-wise. You can even fit 700c wheels. As you'd be going fenderless, that would be breeze. The only drawbacks that I can think of for using a Sports frame is the Raleigh propriety 26tpi threading and the 90mm spacing on the front fork. However, both can be worked around.

I used a regular 1972 Raleigh LTD-SC and stripped it down to just what's needed. And with the SC hub, the coaster brake keeps it clean of the cables. After hearing about the G'vnor, I thought the drum brakes would be a good addition, but i don't like all that hardware....wanted more of a board track look.

I've purchased a frame for the project. A Raleigh Record Ace, late-seventies. I've ordered parts to convert the bottom bracket from cottered to cotter-less. Phil Wood BB and retainers and a Sugino XD crank. Am in the process of spec'ing out the wheels, which will have Sturmey Archer internal brakes, three speed rear and dyno front. I'll build them on 700C Sun CR-18 rims (black). Has anyone used Lugs Chicago for powdercoating?

Project Blackadder Report Day 1: The frame arrived yesterday via UPS. It'll be a fine frame once it's blasted and powdercoated black. I removed the bottom bracket. The fixed cup came out easily. I had been dreading the prospect of it being difficult. I gave the Phil Wood bottom bracket and retainers a test fit. Both retainer rings went in smoothly. I am a bit concerned about the very short (103mm) BB length, but it's what Sugino recommends for their XD crankset. I don't have the crankset yet so I can't test fit it. I'll make an appointment with UV Metalcraft to get the frame powdercoated as soon as possible. If anyone needs a decent Raleigh 10 speed BB (26 TPI for cottered cranks) PM me. If you're considering the Phil Wood retainers and bottom bracket for converting your vintage Raleigh I can tell you the quality is top notch (as it should be for the megabucks they cost).
Project Blackadder Report Day 6: I received packages today from Ben's Cycle & Velo-Orange. I had to order my crank parts from different vendors to get exactly what I wanted. The crank arms, ring and cranks bolts came from Ben's. The chain guard and pedals came from Velo-Orange. Based on my scrutinizing close up pictures of the Guv'nor I believe that I've got the exact crankset, or a very close facsimile. So here's the parts list: Sugino XD2 cranks (I bought 165 mm, but they come in longer lengths), 48 tooth ring, and a 110 BCD chain guard. The pedals are MKS Sylvan Stream. These are exactly what Pashley specifies for the Guv'nor. I bolted the crank snuggly onto the Phil Wood bottom bracket just to make sure all the clearances were good. Next step, the frames goes for powdercoating.

Project Blackadder Report Day 10: Building the wheels for the project now. I finally received the DT Swiss spokes for the project and have the front wheel on the truing stand. I'll lace the rear one tonight or tomorrow so they'll be ready to bolt onto the frame once it's back from powdercoating. The hubs are so large and the flange so thick that it was difficult to get the spokes to lay flat and rotate for the third set to be connected.

Project Blackadder Report Day 10: OK, I get very singleminded when I set about building wheels. Here's the finished wheelset for Project Blackadder. They'll just sit around now until the frame is back from powdercoating. I'll mount the Schwalbe tyres later on today and post in tomorrow's installment. I'm still trying to decide on the Brooks saddle, but I'm waiting to get my Cardiff leather handlebar grips so I can select the color that matches.

Project Blackadder Report Day 12: Not too much to report today. I mounted the Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tyres (700 x 35mm) on the new wheels. Now they'll wait for the frame to return from the powdercoaters. I did have a pleasant surprise on Saturday afternoon. My postman delivered my Tubus Fly (41000) rack from Star Bike in Germany. It's a model that's not yet available to the Tubus distributers in the USA. The Fly is a very slim and light stainless steel rack that will be a perfect addition to the Blackadder project.

Project Blackadder Report Day 13: Just a picture of the Tubus Fly rack being test fitted on the frame. Yes, a rack will take away from the simplicity of the overall look of Blackadder, but I need someplace to carry stuff for those Tweed rides.

Why not get a Cardiff saddle to match the grips?

The rims are Sun CR-18 700C (~22 mm wide) from ComCycleUSA on eBay:

36 hole rims. I believe that the Sturmey Archer hubs only come as 36 hole in all their varieties. The Schwalbe Delta Cruisers fit the wheels quite well. They are 35mm in width.
