The car hit Robert E. McKenny near the intersection of Main Street and Skokie Highway Thursday night, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
McKenny was pronounced dead just after 1 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, the spokesman said. He lived in the 8600 block of Niles Court Road in Skokie.
The accident happened around 8 p.m. Skokie police were not commenting on the crash.

This is the kind of news I hate to hear. My sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. McKenny.

Terrible news. I was just there on Wednesday and know where that happened.
On the way home from school last night just outside of the loop I had stopped in to let a driver know that she was on the wrong side of the road and it was two-way traffic. She didn't seem to care, even after I told her. I had to keep going the other way...and I didn't see her get out of the oncoming lane.
So sad...
I often wonder why there are so many bike ninjas out there. Most of the time, lights and reflectors help, but sometimes drivers are just oblivious no matter what. I recall a crash that happened at Devon and California several years ago where the cyclist was someone whose bike was regularly lit up like a Christmas tree - plenty of lights and reflectors.
Having lights does improve the odds. I was riding last night with plenty of lights and reflectors and had no trouble being seen. That's been my usual experience, but nothing is 100%.
I don't have any info about the guy who was killed last night, so I have no idea whether visibility issues were a factor in his crash.

Main is a well used bike artery. Skokie Blvd is a foolish place to bike.From what I see he was crossing Skokie and likely riding on Main but there are really no details.
I know Bob. I saw him just about every day at work. We're stunned. Upon hearing the news everyone responds, "I just saw him yesterday..."
...and now he's not here.
He bike commuted on a regular basis and I'd always give him grief about not wearing a helmet, etc..., he'd just blow me off and hop onto his bike and ride off.

Why are news article so badly written these days?
" He was riding west across Skokie between cars, and the driver tried to avoid the bicyclist, but struck him and then a light pole."
"Between cars"? If by this they meant, and this is my interpretation, that he blew the light at Skokie and played frogger with his life, why didn't they say so?
