A close relative was carjacked at 26th and Prairie 4/28. Be careful around there.

Two incidents more than a month apart -- hardly a pattern in of itself. But these type of comments , Alan, DO feed into a broader, more general, and at times irrational fear of "the south side." These two incidents are not even really in the same neighborhood.

Unfortunately, incidents like these can happen anywhere. It's generally a good idea to be aware of one's surroundings in any neighborhood.

Five blocks apart.

As far as being in the South Side, I've had the pleasure of working in Hyde Park for over 10 years but I've been careful. My relatives who were robbed at gun point a block from where they live have been dealing with what you call irrational fear every day since it happened. Happy riding.

Five blocks north to south (plus one east to west), but McCormick Place, I-55, and Mercy Hospital stand between. 21st Street is South Loop/Near South Side while 26th Street is in Douglas.

Your relative's experience is very real for them, no doubt, but it should not cause us to generalize.

Several years ago I was robbed at gunpoint in a quiet neighborhood where such things were not exactly common. I'm grateful that all I lost was a bit of stuff that was replaceable.

BTW, I got a good description, found police right away, and they caught the guy. He was arrested and off the street for a while.

A second woman cyclist attacked in South Loop:

"Car Passenger Tried To Rip Backpack From Woman Biking In South Loop: Police"

At 1:10 a.m., the bicyclist, a 32-year-old woman, was riding her bike in the 1400 block of South Wabash Avenue when a black SUV pulled alongside the woman and someone inside reached out and grabbed the woman's backpack, police said.
