The Chainlink

Who here isn't in the Chicago area?

I mostly think of the Chainlink forms as being populated by Chicago cyclists, but every once and a while someone posts something about conditions in another area. I'm not trying to out anyone as an outsider, I'm just curious what the Chainlink's geographic reach is.

As soon as I posted this the end of January, I knew it'd bug me until I went back and...

As of 2/19/12, there are 6641 chainlink members, obviously with varying degrees of activity and participation. Some joined and never posted. I am aware of at least one member who is deceased. I don't think there's any mechanism in place for the chainlink to verify location or residency, but the membership is distributed as follows:

The Chainlink.org has members who report being residents of 33 different states plus the District of Columbia (AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, TN, TX, UT, WA, WI) and from 17 different countries (Ghana, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Israel, Sweden, Netherlands, Japan, China [Hong Kong], Indonesia, Spain, Brazil, Austria, Bahrain, Latvia, and Saudi Arabia). 

I have yet to meet anyone from Oklahoma on a Tweed Ride, or anyone from Saudi Arabia on a Marauders ride, but you never know.

I've never been to Michigan, but I hear that it is great, all the trees are the right height, and the lakes are good too, not just the great ones but the little ones that dot the state. But seriously, Im going up there this summer and am excited to see what the other side of Lake Michigan is like.

That is me! I live in Muskegon Michigan. Why the Chainlink you ask? Here I am the only commuter I see each day. I so much enjoy reading about others riding. I have gotten every useful information from this site. As we speak my bike is in the shop getting Marathon Plus tires based on information from this site. And I also enjoy riding in Chicago. Each year we do Bike The Drive, a few Critical Mass's, and just riding. Igot in 36 miles last weekend in Chicago. Love the site and the city.

That's an impressive amount of research. While I can really only speak for myself here, I find my recollection of the people I've met on Marauders rides to be quite a bit less than perfect. So it is possible that you have met someone from Saudi Arabia.

Greetings from Welland, Ontario.  I have to tell you all, this is the most enjoyable list that I follow, and one of the most informative.  Welland is a small town (pop approx 48,000, but only because we annexed Dain City) located about 25 minutes drive SW of Niagara Falls or 20 minutes NW of Buffalo, NY.

I have a question - during an errand in St. Catharines (going to the big city, as we say), I noticed a sign informing people that there was a bicycle repair kit located at the public library.  I was wondering if this was common?  I've never seen that before, even in the really large urban centres.

Rudolf, that sounds like a very fine library in St. Catherines.  I've never heard of any library anywhere, stocking bicycle repair tools for patrons' use.  And thanks for hanging out with us on The Chainlink.  If you find any reason to visit Chicago, on the last Friday of any month, take the Critical Mass ride through the city with a few thousand new friends.

How is the area around Welland for biking?  Is there a trail along the canal?

I went to the library and found out that the city has these kits at most of the branches, plus the arena, Via train station, bus station and I believe the market as well.  I took a cellcam photo - not much, but enough there to get your bike running so you can get home.  There's even a chain breaker and chain brush.  It's supplied by Canadian Tire, which according to my better half is similar the your White stores. I didn't think the city was so cycle-friendly.

As far as visiting Chicago, it's definitely on my list of things to do!  Ride safe.
