The Chainlink

Okay I haven't ridden the LFP since pre polar vortext (mid Dec. I guess) but a few things surprised me.  I'm assuming a few of you will clarify.

The path is closed and filled  with snow between the Grand St.entrance and North Avenue. Yes I saw the police barricades but tried to do it anyway. Gave up after 50 feet.  I was surprised that there had been no plowing round the entrance area at all, even for pedestrians. And a lot of tourists wander over here from Navy Pier, etc.  I don't recall them not plowing this part of the path in previous years. Is this because of the snow/cold? Will they clear it soon?

Just South of Fullerton there is probably a 150 meter stretch of the path that is covered in dirt/mud. Asphalt seems to be gone. Yet I could see no construction equipment. I biked through it but a bit funky.  Is this the beginnings of resurfacing this part?  Did they stop halfway?

thanks.

The CPD never plows between Ohio Street and Oak Street.  I don't know the exact reason for this, but I assume it's to prevent people from taking the icy bend (due to big swells spilling over the path at that location) and sliding into the feezing lake.  The same could be said for the remaining path between the bend and Ohio street, since it's at an incline the filters down to the water.

At Fullerton, the upper path has always been there.  It's just not normally used as much as this winter.  In winters past the snow would melt away on the paved LFP or it was passable with some caution.  This winter's large snow fall has changed that, and everyone has been forced to use the unpaved upper path.  IIRC, there has been some discussion (on the Chainlink?) about paving the upper path.  I hope that helps.

thanks..didn't even realize that was the upper path (it was dark!).

It's a muddy mess today, and when that area is being rebuilt (next year?) it's going to get a lot messier and will be a pain year-round.

Not only is the unpaved upper path a mess, but the steel landscape edging (why is it even there?) is persona non grata to tires.  I got a flat Divvying home last night, and I'm 90% sure I inadvertently rode over a sharp piece of the steel edging.

I was surprised to see that it was a muddy mess even when it was 0 degrees out on Tuesday morning.

A flat on a Divvy!  At least there is a docking station right at Fullerton and LSD.

That steel stuff is more likely than not old rip rap.  The shore probably used to be where the rip rap still is.  They did not take it out.  They just filled in beyond it.

I know! I was kind of shocked that I could flat a Divvy tire.  Unfortunately for me, this meant I didn't believe it was going flat and I continued north on LFP.  The tire was completely flat by the time I got to the Diversey harbor bridge.  I was able to keep riding with the flat, but it was a very slow and leg burning slog to the Belmont St. station.

The same is true on the path between 57th and 63rd.

Wait a second...150 meter stretch?  your one of those Canadians that look like an American aren't you!!!???

btw, I do know that last year they did not close the path between Grand and Oak because I biked it, even in February. They did have barricades up at the bend (which I go around) but I never saw them block off the entire path at the entrance point (where you enter via Illinois).

ha! I have property in Costa Rica so I got used to marking stuff in meters like the rest of the world.
