What is proper protocol for cyclist on cyclist accidents?

The pet peeves among the pedals thread reminded me of something I've thought about for time-to-time: What would you do or have you done after an accident with another cyclist?

I think about this often after I've gotten into near accidents with other cyclists when it was clearly their fault-- what if there is a liability issue in which someone gets injured and requires medical attention and/or their bike sustains damage from someone else's bad behavior? Do you call the police to file a report? Street justice? Exchange numbers and hope for the best?

Good questions. Never really thought about this.

The same as in two cars. If there are injuries or bike damage, call the police and exchange information.

The only time this ever happened to me was in Champaign. I was on the way to class and the other cyclist was a true gentleman: I left my bike locked at a rack, and by the time the class was over, he had replaced the front wheel and the bike was good to go. I hope this is the case for other cyclist collisions. We get enough grief from the cars without having to turn on one another.
