Sinkhole swallows cars whole on South Side on the 9600 block of South Houston Avenue.

Three fewer cars in the world is a good thing.  Throw in some more while you are at it and cover them up.

Unfortunately one human was hurt in the incident.   Cars are dangerous.

I agree that this stuff loses any entertainment value if there's any question of someone being injured. Likewise, I don't see much wrong with the earth swallowing up cars, as long as no-one is injured.

People have a similar reaction to gore. Lots of people love slasher flims, Quentin Tarantino movies, and other over the top dramatic violence, while most people rightfully cringe when they see video of real violence.

I do not think we are far apart on how we feel on this.  Slapstick cracks me up because I know that nobody actually gets hurt.  The dude going face first into the mud all I can think about is if he broke his nose or not; I get why it is funny but the potential pain to the 'victim' keeps me from being able to find it funny myself.

I never said that I was against insurance here.

Insurance is a personal call.

It's one of the costs of owning a vehicle.   Insurance isn't free, it's a hedge bet -but it comes at a cost. Or going without and taking your chances.  Most of the time insurance costs much more than the average person ever gets back in claims.  That's how the insurance companies stay in business.  If a person can't afford to replace something then insurance is a way to mitigate the risk -at a price.

I wonder if the policies these people had on their autos cover sinkholes and/or flood damage.  Some folks don't have it.  My car is only insured for my own liability plus medical for uninsured motorists that might hit me and my occupants. If this were my car I'd be out a car right now.  Then again it's not worth insuring for comp, much less flood/fire/acts of Zeus.   That's a chance I'm willing to take.  I could buy another car like mine with pocket change.   It's just a car, not a penis extension.  It runs, it goes.  It gets there on trips that are further than I can do with my bike.  I don't care what it looks like.

Nice...

James, you have no feckin clue what you are talking about, Any person who has ever been hit by an uninsured driver will confirm that. So, do me and everyone else a favor, and shut up.

What dost thou know me for?

Some people live their lives they way they want to.  Some people live their lives the way they want to and WHOEVER DOESN'T DO IT MY WAY DESERVES WHAT THEY GET.   Yeah, sometimes people lose their cars, and  sometimes there is a guy watching and clapping his hands.  Serves them right for having cars in the first place, James?

As irrational as it is to hate people with cars, did you know there are people who hate people with bikes?  The two have same mentality, and they can both justify their hatreds.

That makes sense considering your "penis extension" is clearly the Chainlink forum, where you are allowed to bloviate all day long and annoy everyone who isn't a narcissistic self-proclaimed "twat". Get a job.

For once I agree with you.

Excellent point Juan! "Hate the sin, not the sinner."

Missed my point, Tony.  Don't hate at all.  You can see clearly what hate turns you into.

Here's the points I'm getting, Juan:

1) Making judgments about other people's choices goes against the grain of our American freedoms.

We are free to do what we want, and if that means making choices that hasten the destruction of the planet and harm others, that's our right and anyone who doesn't like it should mind their own damn business.

2) If some people who may or may not ride bicycles expresses a "hateful"  attitude about personal automobile usage, then those who are proponents of personal automobile usage are justified in "hating" proponents of bicycle usage.
