Speed cameras are coming to Chicago.
Aldermen on Wednesday signed off on Mayor Rahm Emanuel's plan to put the traffic cameras near parks and schools. The ordinance passed 33 to 14.

Dunno what such reactionary/conservatives are doing reading the WBEZ blog, but there are several super unproductive comments. If you have a minute and care, you might want to respond to some of them.

I think it is a horrible thing that has come to pass and I am a pedestrian, cyclist, and driver (who has not had a moving violation in over 20 years).
Permalink Reply by Tony Adams 6.6 mi on April 19, 2012 at 2:24pm I support the speed cameras. Many many drivers in Chicago drive way way too fast. Something needs to be done. The speed cameras seem like a cost effective way to enforce driving speed regulations.
If you haven't had a moving violation in 20 years what are you worried about?
It is the stretching of the truth as to the reason for installing them. I am not a fan of the automation of ticketing in the city. Where does it stop?
Permalink Reply by Rich S on April 19, 2012 at 2:56pm On the one hand I hate the big brother is watching you everywhere you go aspect of these cameras. On the other hand if CPD enforced traffic laws outside of Lake Shore Drive and O'Hare they wouldn't need automated cameras. I understand that cops need to prioritize but in Chicago there really is minimal enforcement of traffic laws. It's like cops think they're too good to write tickets.

The ordinance has passed, but Mayor Emanuel is delaying their implementation until technology to use them is available. In other words, we passed a law about something we don't know how to do yet.
Permalink Reply by Rich S on April 19, 2012 at 4:18pm They have these all over Europe. The technology exists. In Poland they take a picture of your face and it goes on your driving record. If it wasn't you driving and you don't want it on your record then you have to let them know who was driving.

Permalink Reply by Gabe on April 19, 2012 at 4:28pm I drive for a living and have never had a moving violation. Ever. This is Big Brother pure and simple and it's nonsense. More camera's means more means to track humans as well as vehicles. Backing this is garbage.
Permalink Reply by Mathew DeGutes on April 19, 2012 at 5:47pm It is a revenue grab. The 'it is worth it if it saves just one life' justification is garbage as they have never used that attitude in any of the other non-revenue generating ventures.
Permalink Reply by Adam "Cezar" Jenkins on April 19, 2012 at 10:49pm ITT. Listen to people whine and justify speeding.
You don't have to drive if you don't want to.
I'm also for 7 day suspension for not using a blinker.
Permalink Reply by Gabe on April 19, 2012 at 11:24pm Adam, do you have a job for me? And no YOU don't have to drive, but YOU do have to walk or ride your bike and don't you worry your pretty little head cause Da Mayor is watching.
