The Chainlink

I was just wondering when the city will be removing the excess salt and debris that is on the bike lanes on Halsted (and I'm sure everywhere else in the city) ?

Not to mention taking care of the bolts that stick out of the street from the white "safety lane dividers" that mark the bike lane on the river bridge near Archer Ave. The "safety lane dividers" were either run over or plowed over and need to be replaced, or they should just come out and grind down the bolt nubs that stick out. I believe that they are an unnecessary hazard.

I have had to change 8 flat tires due to debris and salt chunks, in the last 3 weeks. I think that it is a bit unusual. But, then again...who am I ? I am sure that I may have gotten the items on Jackson, Archer or any of the other streets that I take. However, the most debris/excess salt that I see is on Halsted (and on Archer too, but I can clearly avoid those, not so much on Halsted.)

I am not sure who we can get to help out with getting this message to the appropriate people/group/office...but I thought that I would throw this out to our community.

I do however, have found a "plus" to this situation........I am getting better at changing my flat inner tubes and getting back on the road. Yayeee !

Thank you in advance for any help in this endeavor.

Respectfully,

Manny FU

They will get cleaned when it rains.

If salt is causing that many flats get yourself some better tires.

Am I the only one who can read the entire OP? Or was the part about the bolts added later?

Running Schwalbe Marathons at this point, Dug. Maybe I should switch back to the Town & Country's ?
Just tired of finding salt crystals inside the tire, and not finding any hole in the tire, just in the inner tubes.

I guess you were the only one that read that part, h'.

I don't think that I ran over the bolts, but you never know. I guess that I didn't even really give a thought to how those things were attached. Until yesterday, that I saw them sticking out in between the vehicle lane and the bike lane.

Really?  That is surprising.  Are you sure you are getting out whatever was in the tire?

How old are they?  Sometimes when tires like those get old they can get glass and other small stuff worked so far into them or some of the deep cuts it can still cause a flat.  I replaced my Marthon Pluses because they were starting to get frequent flats from small glass that I think was working it;s way through the numerous deeper cuts in the tire.

We all have an inner Beast... said:

Pretty much all the streets are covered with sand, gravel, debris. etc.   You should see some of the piles on Lawrence around the bridge over North Branch.

Dug,

I was rinsing out the tires in the shower and drying them off with some towels after the first 2 flats.

However, after closer inspection (due to your reply above) I noticed that there were a few holes in the grooves in between the treads. Nothing major (I hope). And I have used some gorilla tape as kind of a back-stop. We shall see what happens.

Another issue is that the tires are less than a year old (on my bike), but I don't know how long that they had been in the shop.

Either way, I will probably buy some of the Pluses this year. My Beast seems to like the Marathons. :)

Thank you for the suggestions, Dug. I have always appreciated your tips.

Thank you, Cameron.

I clock about 24 miles a day (12.2ish mi from near Midway Airport), so maybe that is the issue. I will figure it out and get new tires this spring.
