Ridiculous.
yeah. rather annoying. people are dumb. prolly on his cell phone..shit pisses me off.
dude bent the titanium plate in his wrist and rebroke all the bones he broke last time..bike is fine.
never underestimate the ineptitude of motorists. when in doubt yell at them really loud.
Ive noticed with the weather getting cold, people in cars seem to be more in a hurry and more oblivious to cyclists. Seriously do they really need to get to that red light so fast.
@Video-Drome, what's unclear about "he got hit in the bike lane by someone pulling out of a parking spot?" whether or not the cyclist was running red lights or stop signs seems irrelevant, as does the question of whether he saw the car's running lights on. It's the driver's responsibility to check for traffic before pulling out of a parking space.
Ehhh... Sounds like a lame statistic. Divide by the percentage of cyclists using the bike lanes versus roads that don't have bike lanes and you get a better statistic.

I remember back in drivers ed ooooooooh so long ago the teacher said "most accidents occur within 5 miles of your home". Well, duh, 90% of your driving occurs within 5 miles of your house, too. Go figure.

Regardless, you're right about using all the information around you. Look for faces in rear view mirrors, look for taillights on - (if they are shifting their suck automatic from park to drive they have to flip through reverse and the reverse lights flash on for a second... means they are about to pull out and stomp you), etc.
@Video_Drome, I don't disagree with you regarding cyclists' responsibilities to take care of their own safety. I think most people who have been riding long enough to have some experience know to look in the rearview mirror and be aware of cars pulling out. I still maintain that it's the driver's responsibility to not pull out into traffic.

Also, I think you chose some misleading information to share. Cycle lanes are different than cycleways and cyclepaths. The latter two are basically the equivalent of riding on a sidewalk, and we all know that's a bad idea because it's not where drivers will look for you.
Cycleway: road (UK) or path (USA, Canada) dedicated to cyclists on separate right of way.
Cycle track/cycle path or sidepath: roadside converted-footway type structure or sidepath alongside (not on) a carriageway (UK) or roadway (USA).
Cycle lane: a lane marked on a portion of a carriageway (UK), roadway or shoulder (USA), designated for cyclist use.

The information you highlighted, in particular, has little or no bearing on risks of injury in the U.S., where cycle paths are not common. More relevant was this bit: 'Cycle lanes and bike lanes are less dangerous than cycle paths in urban situations but even well-implemented examples have been associated with 10% increases in casualty rates," which, as Ryan said, seems easy enough to explain given that more cyclists will use a street with a bike lane than than one without.
it was like 1:55 in the afternoon. so no need for my light to be on my bike (which i do use at night). also, no chance of seeing tail lights either. 2 lane road on 18th st.
hommie gets to have surg. again on the 19th...i say just cut it off and give him a robot arm...
regardless of the cause / scenario, accidents and injuries just plain suck.

I was reminded last evening and this morning that pedestrians and motorists do stupid impulsive things
when it is rainy and cold - which further jeopardizes our safety.

hope you heal quick and complete and are pain free.

We do have to be more careful, we can't always trust drivers. However, many cyclists are reckless, I am not saying Bill specifically, but cyclists overall. Many cyclists disregard pedestrians the same way drivers disregard cyclists. I constantly see cyclists running the red-light/stop sign and people are walking.
Countless times, I have seen people dodging cyclists that almost ran them over. Then these are the same cyclists who get pissed off at drivers who are reckless to them. Cyclists can be pretty dangerous to pedestrians.

At the end, many cyclists in a sense are hypocrites.
