The Chainlink

I saw a curious sight today. On Harrison or Congress. I was driving south on Cicero this early afternoon, and saw the road was blocked by police vehicles. Traffic was backed up, and I thought it might be due to some crime. I said to my wife, "this doesn't look good." Multiple police officers and lots of flashing lights. Then, to my surprise, a small group of bikers came through heading east thorough this west side neighborhood. There were police vans. Police SUVs, police on bikes, etc. And a pretty small group of bikers passing through. Anyone have any idea who this was? Thanks. I was curious if some politician was in the group with the heavy police escort.

On Fathers day, I was on the Father's day ride at the Cheese cake factory, where there was a police escort thru the entire route. There at least 2 police SUV's blocking the main streets as we passed by. There was no politician on the ride, but the cheese cake owner was.

I was on the 47th ward ride yesterday and we had large group with the 47th ward alderman and there was no police escort, we just stopped at the lights and obey the traffic, unlike last night's LATE ride where there mayhem with traffic, with people honking their horns, even when the police block traffic on the main streets.

What are you saying Jerry? That the Wounded Warriors Bike Riders don't deserve a protective escort? These war veterans who fought for the freedoms that you and I enjoy today don't deserve support in their efforts to rehabilitate/deal with their mobility issues? I think that you are wrong.

Anne Alt was right when she mentioned that it is sometimes not that difficult to get support from local authorities, without clout, if there is an appropriate need or a safety issue for a ride. Just ask, city and other local authorities will try to work with you if possible.

I'll agree with you about the LATE ride. No amount of police can protect this large ride. This is not a CM type ride anymore. Riders have to realize that this is a 'tour type' ride where they are responsible for their own safety on the mean streets of the big city during a festive late Saturday night.

Well said!

When an organization reaches out in advance to a police district, sometimes they can get assistance in the form of an escort and/or intersection blocking to allow the group to stay together. It doesn't necessarily require clout.
