Hi everyone!
I'm a month into biking and am really excited for Critical Mass this Friday.
Never done it before and don't know anyone else who's going.
Anyone else out there new to this and want to meet up before it starts?

I think proportional to the percentage of riders from the south and southwest sides, CCM has headed south much more than one would expect over the years. If it hasn't gone that way much recently, I think it's more a sign that overall investment in the ride has been squelched (which is why the meager February turnout is troubling.)

There's a lot of truth in what you say, James. In my very limited Mass experience, I've only heard of one Mass that went to the town of Cicero (to view the now-gone Car Spindle in a shopping center). And I've never heard of a Mass going down Archer to Midway Airport or down to Hyde Park, Pullman or Blue Island. Anyone with longer Mass experience know of any South-Side-bound Masses in the past?

People tend to subconsciously ride back towards home rather than away from it. This effects the route quite a bit.

Most "Chainlink people" tend to get acquainted at bar night or other smaller events rather than CCM, although I've put more than a few names to faces at after-CCM bar stops or parties.

How can a CCM noob meet up with Chainlink people at Daley Plaza?
Permalink Reply by James BlackHeron on March 29, 2012 at 8:16am You can find me by my chrome and black city bike that I usually ride to CCM. I most often park my bike at, and then hang out by, the SW corner of the Picasso raised platform/dais/slab/whatever. I'll abandon the corner if someone lights up in my vicinity as I just can't stand to be anywhere around cigarette smoke -but short of that I usually don't get more than 20' from that point until the bikes start moving.

What time do you usually get there? I'm coming from the UIC area, so meeting someone at Daley Plaza is a better option to catching up with people on the North Side. I'll look out for you and I'll be with my lavender mountain bike. Thanks for being awesome to the new kids!

Permalink Reply by James BlackHeron on March 29, 2012 at 8:47am It depends on many things on what time I get there.
#1 is the weather. If it is yucky or cold I don't want to be sitting around in the yucky & cold too long -especially right after a ride down there where I might be a bit sweaty, and before another SLOW ride (and CCM is SLOW)
#2 is if I"m running late. Sometimes I get there at 6 and don't have time for much more than a short break before the ride starts.
But I get there at about 5:30 or even earlier on nice days when I'm not running late.

See ya all at the bikecapades!
Permalink Reply by Anne B. on March 29, 2012 at 8:26pm Hey Robin- just sent you a message- I'm also heading to CCM from the UIC campus, if you want to meet up and bike over together. Leaving probably 5ish.

I'll make it as clear as mudd. South side + little cycling infrastucure = less people riding bicycles. Thus fewer people from that part of town showing up for CM and ending up far north each time.
Ok, so I get the point of CM sprawling its organic tentacles regardless of bike lanes, hek! we even went on the expressway one time.
So it is what it is until someone throws in a south side destination...
I don't understand the connection you're alluding to between cycling infrastructure and CCM.
The great thing about CCM has always been that you weren't limited to streets with "cycling infractructure" and could feel safe riding down Western Ave.
