Not sure how widely this info has been spread, but imagine my (for once, pleasant) surprise to stumble on plans to produce multi-user crossings over the river at Roscoe and George. Anyone have any more details/inside dirt on how close these are to reality?
These would be included as part of a huge TIF-funded overhaul for the Addison/Chicago River industrial corridor in eastern Avondale/western North Center. There actually appears to be a considerable amount of tangible green infrastructure included.
you can see specifics here, please note it's a massive file of about 80 MB:
here's similar info on the south Addison Corridor TIF:
That would be super-awesome. Not quite rock my world awesome that would take making the Diversey bridge 1-lane each way with a protected cyclepath at the sides. There just are very few safe river crossings in this area with the possible exception of Damon which isn't all that safe either IMHO due to the crap intersections at both ends and the fact that autos tend to drive over it at 60+ MPH and buzz bikes on the bridge for "kicks" -I know I'm not the only person this has happened to.
The Webster and Courtland bridges are much better but out of the way. Fixing Diversey would be awesome sauce in my book but a new bike bridge at Roscoe would be a great addition too. I just don't know WTF the planners were thinking when they rebuilt the North bridge a couple years back. What a lost opporunity that was.
Some of the worst areas in this area are the pinch points over the river and under the Kennedy. They are mostly bad, and there are only a few few places where one can cross at all. At least with other roads when there are bad areas for us riders we can detour but the crossings over the river and under the Kennedy are what they are and none are really very good if you ask me.
Road diets and protected bike lanes are the answer IMHO.
I would love this, and only hope that I'm still here when it happens. I live in western Avondale, on the corner of Roscoe, and to get to ca. Lakeview, etc. Belmont and Addison are my only choices to cross the river and the freeway without going significantly out of the way. Diversey is better than either, and at least not hugely out of the way. Webster is good, but too far south. I'm fine taking B. or A., because I have to, but I pick up Roscoe from just east of the river and take that all the way east, and it would be terrific to be able to take it all the way home. I certainly feel a lack of decent freeway and river crossing points in this area.
