New map uses infrared data to show where Chicagoans like to run, ride bikes

A heatmap using data compiled from a fitness app shows where Chicagoans like to run and take their bikes: in the city’s big parks and along streets that cut across the grid system.

It isn't infrared.  It is GPS devices.

This data is hugely biased to the point where it should be more or less disregarded. The people who use Strava are a subset of riders who are fitness oriented or at least fitness conscious and who bother to install and use the app(s) on a mobile device. This leaves out at least a large segment of commuters and utility riders, messengers etc.
