Bah! I am building up my newest commuter. Found a used groupo off ebay, lined up a buyer on my current bike, and just ordered my frame, headset, and brakes from my LBS.
However, in doing some research on actually building the damn thing, I found I've made a tiny mistake. My FD is a 34.9 clamp....the Surly Crosschecks are 28.6 Diameter.
So I ask, does anyone have a spare double Shimano 105 (or better) Front sitting around. Need it to be able to support a 10 speed, so Tiagra/Sora will not work as a replacement, IIRC.
Gonna call Yojimbos tomorrow and see what they have lying around...any other places I might be able to pick one up on the cheaps?

i have an unused braze-on FD5600 that came on my tt bike that i just took off as soon as i unboxed it.
Permalink Reply by S on January 6, 2013 at 10:40pm I'm not entirely sure but I think SRAM road FDs will also work and be compatible. If that's the case, you could probably get an apex fd for less than a 105.

Permalink Reply by TehDoak on January 6, 2013 at 11:40pm I could shim if it was 31.8 to 28.6....I don't believe I can shim 34.9 down to 28.6

Just shim it: $2.
Permalink Reply by notoriousDUG on January 7, 2013 at 8:49am They do not make a shim to go from 34.9 to 28.6. You *could* use a pair of shims or build it up with rubber tape but I would not consider that ideal...
Sram FD will work as will a FD that is not 10 speed specific if you find one.
You can also use a braze-on FD by simply purchasing a braze-on adapter for the tube size of your bike.
I will check today when I am at the shop but we may have a 105 FD that will work for you that has been lying around for some time...

Permalink Reply by milkbar on January 7, 2013 at 9:57am The Shimano 770s (of 2003-2007?) did come with aluminum 28.6-34.9 shims. I used to have a box of them, but couldn't even give them away. I have dozens of NOS Dura-Ace and Ultegra 28.6 mechs if you need one, $20. But it sounds like you're set!
Permalink Reply by notoriousDUG on January 7, 2013 at 11:19am No dice; I thought we had one but I can't find it.

Permalink Reply by TehDoak on January 7, 2013 at 11:50am The bike will primarily be a commuter, but I plan to use it for weekend riding, centuries, and maybe even a couple day touring ride in the future, so I'm going for the wider range.
