I was just doored heading east on Diversey ave a couple blocks west of Racine ave by a hispanic man who didn't speak much english at all and drove off immediately after I tried "talking" to him about it. I didn't get a plate number because I was in a daze and I still am. I have road rash on my arms, but I seem to be ok... I think. I have weird head, shoulder and neck pain. Luckily I was wearing my helmet today because it cracked on the ground on impact. Otherwise there would probably be skull bits all over the pavement.
I didn't even know what happened, I just felt impact and my head smacked the ground. I'm ashamed that I don't have health insurance, but I just can't afford it.

If you cracked your helmet in a crash, at the very least have someone keep an eye on you all day incase you suddenly get worse. Head injuries are not something to take lightly, get your head checked by a doctor if at all possible.
Permalink Reply by Zoetrope on August 13, 2012 at 11:57am About the only advice I feel qualified giving out is to stay off the bike for a while, especially since you're having pain in different areas of your body. It's possible you have a concussion, but I'm sure you'd have to see a doctor to determine which grade. Avoiding strenuous exercise is probably the smartest thing you can do when a concussion is involved. Monitor yourself and don't overdo it for a while, especially if you've had concussions in the past. Good luck, and glad to see you're well enough to be typing, at least.

Apparently there is no medical treatment available for concussions -- only rest and controlling your exposure to light etc. Look into getting a CTA pass or something while you recover.

Go to the ER. Have someone take you to Stroger if you can.
They'll see you without insurance, they have to. They also have social workers on staff that work out funding for uninsured patients.

Permalink Reply by Melissa M on August 13, 2012 at 12:20pm Yes. Go to the doctor now.
There may be no treatment for a concussion but they will check to see if you have brain swelling or contusion or if you injured your neck, any of which they can and need to treat.
Do you have anyone you can call?
Nausea following a head injury can mean serious problems. DO NOT LIE DOWN and what ever you do, DO NOT TRY TO SLEEP IT OFF. Have someone come over right now and keep an eye on you. Also get medical attention, as others have noted an ER can not refuse treatment.
