I goggled the Marathon Plus. They do look great. I am from out of town, and no one around me carries them. I could get on line. Are they as hard to put on as some reviews say?

I have them on 20" wheels and there is no give in them, so they require due diligence. Considering how long they last without a flat, they are worth it. You can order them online here.

I'm new to winter biking this year. I thought I had all the basic gear, but you are right on the glasses. I have shown up at work looking like I just auditioned for a romantic comedy, tears everywhere. Any recommendations on where to get inexpensive glasses that aren't tinted?

Thanks!

I agree that this would be considered the first cold day and it is not comforting that it technically is still fall! Thankfully I unearthed all my cold weather gear a couple of weeks ago and have my setup all dialed in for the next couple months. If you have the right gear it is a nice, refreshing, way to spend your morning commute and reward yourself with a hot beverage at your destination. On the flip side, if you are not prepared with a helmet that can comfortably accommodate a hat, scarf or neck protection and warm gloves it can be the worst decision of your day hop on the bike in the morning. The final piece, which doesn't make it any warmer, just more comfortable is a pair of clear lensed glasses which keep my eyes from watering, and tears from freezing on the super cold days.

Be careful of the ice tonight and for the next couple days as the snow melts and freezes along the sides of the streets!

I have several, surprisingly good looking, if I do say so myself, safety glasses from Home depot.

Looove these, especially at only 8.99:

Most safety glasses are not comfortable enough to wear for cycling, but these are wonderful.

You lose a touch of periphery due to design so add one of these at $15:

Available at Rapid Transit North and Ciclo Urbano.

That's my close-to-perfect solution and I'm sticking to it.

I heard Lake Michigan this morning, yipeee!  Thanks to the persuasive pics Gene posts for us!  LFP was like the Caribbean of the Midwest.  Sunny, varying shades of blue sky and water.  I will admit, some body parts that usually get a rest when stopped at red lights were giving me feedback South of Fullerton.

+1, on the Marathon Plus tires, I felt like I hit the big time when those got mounted last March.

P.M. commute, nice to see scores of cyclist at Lincoln Square Lanes.   ;)  Crit destination?

Melanie is the blue Mixte still one you ride?  I said good morning to a blue Mixte driver this past week.  She continued South on Western at Leland, so figured it wasn't you.

That is easily solved, click on settings, then at the bottom of that page is a link titled "leave the chainlink" a couple of clicks and problem solved

I got the safety glasses now I'm going for that mirror next up.  That thing looks neat, and really unobtrusive, too.

Did you get these Bolles from Optics Planet?

First thing to do with the mirror is secure it to the glasses with a bit of electrical tape once following the instructions on how to mount it.

I don't think there's a chance in hell they'd stay put without the tape.

If this cat ever gets off my lap, I'm going to get a credit card and order some of those. Thanks h!

Most safety glasses are too tall to fit under my helmet (with absurd baseball cap brim).

No I actually got a pair from Home Depot so I could try them on, but they look pretty much the same.  Bummer about the mirror not having a secure fit.  I might have to stop by a shop and see if it's compatible with the glasses.  I hate having rig stuff up like that unless completely necessary, just out of fear of the mirror falling off or something.

Why bummer? I put the tape on immediately, never tried it without. Stayed put for over a year.

I've looked at Home Depot but haven't seen any safety glasses there that looked like they would be comfortable for this sort of use.
