FYI: Some Canadians have designed a pretty great looking helmet mirror that looks like a great commuting accessory, but they need funding to get it made. Check it out here:

I have nothing to do w/this, but I just think it's cool and would like to see it available for sale. It's expensive, and there are many much cheaper options, but it looks like it would work pretty well.

Looks like a great idea.  Am I missing where it says how much it would retail for on the site?

You could get one mirror for $70 or ten mirrors for $500 ($50/each).

So, let's just pretend I could add everything from all these different helmets I see onto a cheap helmet. I'd have:

Helmet: $15

Helmet Covering: $60 (Yakkay covering)

Light for Helmet: $50 (The lighted helmet kickstarter)

Mirror for Helmet: $70 (The above)

And ... now my helmet cost more than my bicycle! Soon I'll be up into *car* pricing. ACK!

Not that they're not all great ideas.

Agree with that.  I understand the 'kickstarter' dealy, but 70, or even 50 for that mirror is way too much.  30 tops.

We don't even get a break with the exchange rate.  Today, 70 Canadian dollars costs $71.77 in US dollars.

$70 for a bit of bent metal with a mirror at the end?  a few threaded knurled nuts?

srsly?

For seventy bucks you can buy a terabyte hard drive.  A million tiny machined parts all moving in perfect harmony at 5,900 rpm and delivering 3.0Gb/s data speeds.

When you think about it, this bent piece of metal with a mirror on the end doesn't seem all that fancy or special.  But hey, it's only money.

Not doing these folks any favors by not pointing out that there's a basic failure here to look at the market and see what's already available at what price point.

They'd have to be able to crank these out at around $20 retail IMO to have a shot at capturing a portion of the tiny portion of cyclists who see the benefit of such a device.
