F*CK $H!T D@mn! My Kryp-Lock Is Rusted Shut

I had one of those Kryptonite Forgettaboutit chain locks, the big one, and the moisture in the storage room has rusted the damn thing shut. Any tips on getting my chain back?

WD-40 is great at loosening rust. Unload a can into the lock and wait a little while (have a beer, you'll feel better). If that still doesn't work, do it like the tieves: grab an angle grinder, some sleeves, and a mask, and go to town. It will take a while, but it's supposed to.

 

I'd be shocked if WD-40 didn't unsieze it though.

WD-40 or go to an auto store and they will have a rust solution much like 3 in 1 oil.

Have you tried Liquid Wrench yet?  I've seen it do wonders at loosening up nuts that are rusted onto their bolts.

Nothing beats PB Blaster.  Liquid Wrench would be my next option; then WD40.  Whatever you use, give it a little time to soak before trying to break it loose.

Spencer, you must really love cigars to have a humidor big enough to store bikes in it.  Or is that your rain forest reclamation/bike room?

I can lend an angle grinder if you want  to go that route. You have to promise to time and film it.

Had a problem like this and went to my favorite locksmith with the rusted Kryptonite Evolution padlock and cable holding my spare wheel onto the bottom of my car. They cordless angle ground it in less time than it takes to read this reply (slowly) and zipped through heavy cable to help move the wheel out in less than a second. Cost me I think $10. Moral: insure your bike because the lock isn't going to do it.

Wd-40 has no place being used, well for anything, but sure as hell not a penetrating lube.

 

Try a penetrating lube and/or graphite.

Marvel Mystery Oil will break just about anything free even though it's not the thinnest penetrant ever devised.  I'm not sure what it is about it but it works great.  I've had engines with stuck rings that nothing else would work and MMO was able to free them right up in a couple of hours.

 

Other options would be PB Blaster or Freeze-off.  Banging on the side of it with a hammer might help free it up after oiling it.
