Evanston bicyclists will soon find themselves pedaling along Church Street in a protected bicycle lane.

City staff recently presented aldermen with plans for several streetscape improvement projects, and one includes the construction of a protected bicycle lane along Church from McCormick Boulevard to the lakefront.

The new path physically separates bicyclists from motorists via lane separators. The path is also distinguished by a jade pavement coloring.

Yay!  And to add to the good news, Evanston will try out a test of its first ever in-street bike corral in front of the Evanston Athletic Club on Benson north of Church (similar to the one at Milwaukee & Damen in Chicago) for a couple of months this summer, to see if it gets used.  If the test goes well, there are three other additional bike corral sites in mind already: Maple north of Church (movie theatre), Sherman near Grove (Tommy Nevin's) & Chicago at Church (Whole Foods, Dave's Italian Kitchen).

Pages 376-382 in this document have lots of information on the project, pictures & maps. (It's a hefty 27 MB download though--don't say I didn't warn you!).  City council Public Works committee deliberation here for two whole minutes 7:27 to 7:29, for approval of the project.

In bad bicycle Evanston news: the 6th annual North Shore grand prix race has been canceled, due to lack of corporate sponsorship.

That's a shame that the Evanston Grand Prix was cancelled.

Yeah, it's been a fun and awe-inspiring event for several years now.  Hopefully some company with deep pockets will step up next year and get it going again.
