The Chainlink

I rode the DPRT South from Big Bend Lake to Sunset Bridge Meadow at North Ave.  When I got to Sunset the yellow markings ended and I rode some singletrack through a fallen tree heavy area.  I ended up on the side of North Ave at Thatcher.

Every DPRT map I have found seems to end the South portion of the trail at this spot.  Does the trail go any further and if so, where do I pick it up?

The DPRT trail does more or less end there but for a sure fire way to keep on Chooglin'... Exit onto Bloomingdale Ave just before you arrive at the end of Sunset Bridge Meadow parking lot /DPRT@North Avenue. I attach a map link here

After you wiggle your way through those side streets and a enter onto a short paved bike trail, you will eventually see an amazing steel memorial structure at Portage Park.  Once there, go near the busy street. Take the "roadside green path" south a 1/4 of a block to Portage Trail Road, which becomes Canal Road.

And this is where... in a Holk Hogan voice ... "a whole new world opens up Brotha!" You will find some real neat shit going on over here! (no pun intended). Take this industrial route that showcases the inner workings of how this great city of Chicago operates. Canal Road will take you on a journey all the way to the Willow Spring Road over pass. (*Note Regualr google map view shows Canal Road ends before it gets to Williow springs Road, ignore it because it does go all the way. Confirm it by switching to satellite view and you will see Canal Road continues to Willow springs Road).

Once you get to Williow springs road and wrap around to west side of it, you can grab a Drink at Imperial Oak Brewing then take the Metra train back home. Or grab a drink and bike-pack all the way to Starved Rock State Park via the I&M canal bike trail. The Choice is yours.

If you end up going, post some photos, would love to hear how the ride went. Much Love and Adventure ON'

I'm pretty sure anything south of North ave is off limits for bikes. Yes, there are alot of areas that look rad and are rideable.  I think Thatcher woods is just a footpath, not intended for bikes. It's a little lower elevation and is even more prone to flooding/staying wet that other parts of the southern part of DPRT. Some maps that might help.

Also the DPRT riders FB page is a good source for figuring out trail conditions.

Oh thanks!  I want to fully Hulk Hogan this one for sure.

Is there a good route to get from the DPRT to the Salt River Trail?  I would like to try to ride to the zoo as well.

On Streets, yes.

-South on Thatcher

-East on Chicago

-South on Lathrop

-East on Madison (for 1/2 block)

- South on Des Plaines Ave

-West on 31st Street

or...https://www.google.com/maps/dir/31st+Street+%26+McCormick+Avenue,+B...!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x880e35ea25bdd25b:0xb0676d927b852f51!2m2!1d-87.8370834!2d41.8352107!1m5!1m1!1s0x880e352e06bd95f5:0x6598daea41b11eff!2m2!1d-87.8257314!2d41.8938294!3e1

this will take you to Zoo as well as the trailhead for the Salt Creek Trail (McCormick/31st)

Any suggestions for exits to get off and grab a coffee on the DPRT?
