I know you said space is an issue but all of these are cheap and fold to about 6-10 inches thick and you can put them just about any where. depending on the actual size of the dog you could look at a rear rack with a crate bolted on and a fabric liner? just an idea.

35 lbs is really heavy to carry on your back while riding. a trailer sounds like your best option,but if the dog is small enough maybe a front or rear basket would do the trick.
