The Chainlink

Do we need designated bike 'security' at events like last night's?

Just puttin' it out there.

Considering there are bikes everywhere for the taking, I seriously doubt anyone is finding events on chainlink or elsewhere and seeking them out in order to steal bikes.

More likely is that people don't lock as well as they normally would when the bike facilities in a given location are overwhelmed by a large group of cyclists, creating easy opportunity.

The event could also be made less viewable to the public, you don't even need to log in to know where alot of unattended bikes will be.

More bikes, not locked as well, all in the same area.

What's not to like and seek out?

As far as "locking the website" is concerned the CCM website is not affiliated with CCM.  CCM is leaderless and has no official sponsors or organnizers.  It is spontanius community activism and cohesion.  But there is no one site or person that can be pointed to as representing the "movement" per se and no way to make it "locked" so only bicyclists can view events.

And how would that even be possible or, if so, a good thing?  Anything that makes it harder to view what is going on will only reduce over-all participation.  I'm sure that the Establishment would LOVE that.

The solution is better education about locking bikes and self-security within the community.  We need to either make that happen or accept that we are going to be selected as the juicy targets we are.

I've made a resolution to never go out, even for a short pleasure ride, without two high-end U-locks and always use them both.  I refuse to be a juicy target any longer.

+1.  I lug around two u-locks and at least one cable everywhere.  Some people carry only a cable.  If people want to ride home on their bikes, they should assume it'll be stolen and invest in some security.  I'm sick of hearing "No, it's ok.  My bike's a piece of $#!%, no one will take it." when I offer to throw my cable through their wheel or something.  Ehhh...people dig through garbarge for food.  People will cut a cable, a u-lock, even two-u-locks for a free ride somewhere or a quick $20.  It should be worth more to you to ride your bike home.

Also, I will be raffling off a u-lock soon at an upcoming First Friday Ride.  Howard, perhaps I'll propose something for some assistance from bikewinter.org, as you suggested.  Tonight's raffle prize, among other freebies/giveaways, is bike security-related.  Come join.  A bunch of us carry multiple locks and are all about getting people and their bikes home altogether after a nice Friday night ride.

The only thing I use a cable for these days is to lock up my trailer.  U-locks just don't cut it, and the stupid thing comes apart into so many pieces it wouldn't do any good anyhow.

Cables are so easy to cut.

The cable is only for and extra secure look...double locking everything that is already locked...and my rack.

Sure, they're easily cut but what more can be done?  Actual pitbulls and bulldogs?  Every little bit helps.

Ah, the pitbull and the bulldog are baby locks.  I only use the brute.  And if they are still there trying to cut my two Brutes then they will discover the REAL brute.

The Buddha says all suffering comes from desire... Still?..

I am not sure that dude even HAD a soooper nice bike.

I would glady lay down this life to defend our bikes. S'ok!... I've had a good run!

Realizing this can be a vacuous buzz-word slung around with ease... Yet?... If not a cycling "Seal Team Six"?.. Just what other factors are acceptible to, and/or define, a "community"? That is... if it is not looking out for one-another? Then what exactly is a "community". Pinko talk. I know.

So nice to see the CPD, in farce I mean in force every single CCM... Sure we appreciate their service. Let's see... work a beat in Garfield Park... or ride CCM. That is a toughie.

Still... I see more cops at a single CCM than a week of rush hours on the Weisenheimer I-290... Or the entire month I worked a gig for Cease-Fire.

Priorities. Serve and protect.

The thing is? If they needed it? I'd have gave that jackass the blinky they stole.... But that is me... a wild-eyed radical.

The delicious irony of it all is not lost on me.

I meant living, breathing, biting pitbulls and bulldogs.

I'm sure they do seek out events just like we find stolen bikes posted on Craigs list. A posting like after party after CCM tba, log in to rsvp and get details. Limiting the info to members and the fliers they hand out. Why give someone a heads up to gather all the tools they need ahead of time? Locks and locking education is a 101 step but
yes educate.

That's good stuff.

3 U Locks and one cable to a sign post that was checked to ensure the bolts were tight. Went as friends and figured despite the tasty target it would be too much of a hassle to try to get all 3 locks intertwined w the cable.
