From the Associated Press.

Communities along the Illinois River Road National Scenic Byway will benefit from two grants aimed at improving visitor experiences and making the byway a destination for bicyclists.

The Illinois River Road received a grant of just over $70,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration. That money will go toward creating audio stories about the region's history. Travelers will be able to download the narratives at the Illinois River Road website.

The second grant of just over $271,000 will go toward adding 362 bike racks at key sites and in communities along National Scenic Byways throughout the state, including about two dozen at Illinois River Road sites.

The racks will include barcodes that can be scanned to get information to cyclists via smartphones.
