Chicago’s South Loop Expands Use of Protected Bicycle Lanes

The construction of new bike lanes and barriers in the South Loop is set to begin in 2017 and the project is meant to reduce the number of bicycle and pedestrian accidents in the area. As Chicago continues to present itself as a bike friendly city, a recent string of bicycle related fatalities and injuries has sparked concern over how well the city has adapted to the needs of the cyclists it is trying to attract ... The number of accidents in the area has also dropped by 30%, but data also shows that 10% of riders fail to comply with traffic laws.

It's good to read about Harrison getting an upgrade.

"Harrison Street bike lanes will also receive concrete barriers to ensure that motorists and bicyclists are separated and to discourage the illegal use of the bike lane by drivers. The issue of drivers parking in the bike lane will also be resolved through this measure."

Good luck with that. They still park/drive in the Dearborn lane near the new concrete barriers. Unless it is physically impossible for cars to enter the lane, they'll find a way, even if it means smashing through a series of bollards.

That would be quite and unpleasant surprise for the driver who thinks the new bollards are still plastic.

"The number of accidents in the area has also dropped by 30%, but data also shows that 10% of riders fail to comply with traffic laws. This is a considerable nuisance to pedestrians and motorists."

And pedestrians step out against the light, or from between parked cars; and motorists crowd the crosswalk, or enter the intersection late.

My gut feeling is cyclists' compliance rate falls in line with that of pedestrians and motorists but I would love to see one, just one legitimate study confirming this.
