The fact that the TSA makes traveling to the United States a nightmare for foreigners might have had something to do do with Chicago losing the Olympic bid:

Yes I remember Mr. Ali from the 50th ward presentation. They were plugging the great cultural experience of the Olympics. I guess discrimination at the airport would be one of then.

It all boils down to politics, money, and representation. Peter Ueberroth pissed off the IOC for years and the USOC wasn't willing to forfeit any of the dough from US television broadcast rigthts to the IOC. We only had representation from Mexico and Canada and I'm guessing Mexico might have voted for Rio over us. It was naive for Chicago to believe we could just waltz in and win in an international voting situation.

IMO this is a nice piece describing the reasons why Chicagoans resisted the Olympics - in short..were just sick of taking it up the ass from the city.
