Last year my fiance and I did the Soldier Ride when it came through town. But Wounded Warrior Project canceled their rides ... http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/programs/soldier-ride/communit...
When we did the ride I was able to raise a lot of money easily. But it didn't seem to be well organized and wasn't very big or got a lot of press, which I assume is why it didn't raise enough to continue. I think if there was a better run ride it would attract more. Though WWP is instead starting 5ks and if there's one here, I'm not sure about competing for the same dollars...
My fiance specializes in representing vets (she's an attorney) and there are a ton of disabled vets (and people in general) that have no help as they age. It is really awful. She may have some input for you or be interested. I will pm you her details.
Please see below for information on volunteering for the 2012 Valor Games Midwest, Aug 13-15. This is an exceptional opportunity to give back to the courageous men and women who have served our country. And, it’s going to be really fun!
Volunteer listings and sign-up can be found here. Please share with any and all who may be interested in helping out.
Also, there is still room for qualified athletes to register. The event is open to veterans and service members with physical and visual disabilities, as well as those with PTSD or any disability rating from the VA. Apply here.

You could def raise money for an existing organization. There are tons of them with wonderful missions including like someone mentioned raising money for veterans. Wounded warrior apparently isn't happening in in the region but you can ride alone or join one in another region to help support them.
This weekend alone you could ride your bike and help these important organizations:

Absolutely and have I got the event for you! Sgt. Travis Mills and his wife Kelsey! I work with Team Mills and would be forever indebted to you if we could have a ride to raise funds for this amazing veteran and his wife. Are you familiar with him?
If not, please go to, http://www.travismills.org/
You can set the event up through me, since I on their legal team. I'll help any way possible! Thanks, Hilary Phillips, attorney for wounded warriors

Would love to see the Chainlink start an annual ride & fund for disabled veterans! The Wounded Warriors Project dropped the Soldiers Ride from the Chicago area this year. Very poor turnout last year.
How about the Chaninlink "Travis Mills Annual Soldier Ride"? We can get it posted to the TravisMills website if we are seriousl about it. I'll take care of the details.......
I can do any ground work on this for the Chainlink if you are interested. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
