The Chainlink

Hi all, I have a summer job at Northwestern University, and I am going to be living in Lakeview (near the Sheridan/Dakin L stop). What bike routes would you recommend for commuting to/from work? Is it a good route to go up on Clark and then continue as it turns into Chicago? That seems like a direct route but I don't know how those streets are.

Clark / Chicago straight up is perfectly fine, and is the most direct. However, I find Glenwood to be more pleasant, and it's my default route to Evanston (I do it at least once a week) when I'm coming from down there and not taking the lake. You cannot pick up Glenwood (it's aligned with Southport) until about Argyle, however. It and Greenview will take you from Argyle/Winnemac to the cemetery on the Evanston border, after which you have to take either Chicago or Sheridan to get around it (I take Chicago). Once past the cemetery, if I am going to NU or downtown Evanston, I go one block east to Hinman and take that north - it is wide and has much less traffic than Chicago. It will take you to the southern edge of NU.

Alternatively, if you don't mind going over to the lake you can take the LFP to its end at Ardmore and follow the marked route from there - from Devon northward you will be on Glenwood/Greenview.

From where you are LFP to the end at Ardmore.  Kenmore north (Winthrop on your return home) to Granville.  Left (west) on Granville to Greenview. Right (north) on Grenview. You jog a bit as you cross Devon.  (this is one way north. On the way home take Bosworth which is one way south).  At Pratt you job again. Just east to continue on Greenview. (on the way home you will have been over on Ashland then jogging a bit east to Bosworth). Greenview goes all the way to Howard St. Turn left (west) on Howard to Clark which is Chicago Ave. in Evanston. Turn right on Chicago and take it all the way north to your destination. If you wish you can turn east once you get past Oakton or South Blvd. Go east a couple blocks and take Hinman or Judson all the way to campus.

On your return take Chicago to Howard. Left (east) to Ashland. Take Ashland which winds a bit at first  Ashland. Ashland south to Pratt. At Pratt go left to Bosworth and right on Bosworth south to Devon. Left on Devon to Greenview and you are then on the same route that you took north.

I have a tendency to go West on my way back from training rides to avoid Clark. I don't like riding on it heading South from Evanston - too many near misses so now I avoid it. I'd recommend trying some of the alternatives.
