So my son's moved there, and I guess I'll try to find him a good tech - anyone got a good 'guy' or 'gal' in the vicinity that can overhaul a Specialized Hard Rock?

Two off the top of my head; Rapid Transit's south-side location is on Halsted ca. 1400 south, which isn't too far away. Pedal to the People could, I'm sure, ride down there.

Blue city is further south, but good folks. Also on halsted and 31st. Working bikes is 24th and western. He could volunteer there and learn how to do an overhaul and such.

if his bike isn't rideable and he's not able to get transportation from someone, he can roll it to irv's bike shop at 18th and racine.  super close!  there's also a shop that sells choppers on 18th and laflin, but i don't know if they do any service.  never had anything fixed at either of those shops, but sometimes proximity trumps all.  i have stuff replaced at rapid transit and blue city, and they are both very knowledgeable and reasonablely priced.

Looks like the closest is Wheel of Time at about 18th and Ashland.  http://thewheeloftime.co/

Have to plug the Q at honkey tonks at 18th and Racine. Some of my favorite BBQ in the chi.

If we are going to talk about food, Simone's at 18th and Morgan!  And they are very bike friendly folks!

There's also a "secret" bike shop in the vicinity of 18th and Western, but I wouldn't recommend them without knowing something about the quality of their work.

And don't forget Working Bikes now offers a full service bike shop---- good people there.

I think Pedal to the People is based out of 37th and Racine still (?) but we're talking about an 'overhaul' here.

Best possible scenario is that he gets up to Division and Western and gets some help in doing it himself at West Town Bikes.

Have him go to Irv's. It's a good LBS. Fair prices for good stuff. Good conversation as well. He just has to figure out the hours that they are open.

Rapid Transit - South is also a very good place. I have been extremely pleased with the service that I have gotten there.

There is also a new bike shop on Archer Ave...East of 35th ST and West of Western....Pilsen Bike Shop, I think it's called...I don't know anything about it....yet.

Side note: I bought my 2009 Schwinn Frontier (The Beast) from Irv's, but I have started going to Rapid-South because on more than one occasion I have ridden all the way to Irv's to get a part or such, just to find it closed. Rapid-South is on my route (to work and back) and is open when I have been in need (broken pedal spindle, brake pad threaded area snapped off leaving me with no rear brakes, missing teeth on the cassette and stretched chain, just to name a few.

Does Irv's not have posted hours?
I've never seen a business survive very long once they stop maintaining regular business hours.

They go to "Winter Hours", h.

And it really sucks to try to get there on only one pedal (while on your way home in the snow, divert from a plowed route with a bike lane, and such) thinking that they are open, just to roll up and find that they won't be open today.

Then, have to go back to my route and go to another bike shop.

I could've used my phone, but I was already miserable due to work and the weather, and the pedal snapping off didn't help my mood any. I probably could have made it home without my brake pad, but got it fixed right then and there.

I try to relax when I ride home. That way I can enjoy my "off-time". Just a bad experience that day.

Notice, I did put Irv's first. It is one of my go-to LBS', and it's not that close to my house !

I am sure that they have a sign with their hours on there, just kind of hard to see from Halsted. LOL !!!
