Beware the Glare

A reminder that at this time of the year, the setting sun is at the peak of rush hour.

Nearly got creamed the other night, I was travelling eastbound and the driver turned directly in front of me. It was 6pm - already had my front blinky light on. While that driver may be a jerk, in his defense he/she may simply not have been able to see me.

As a driver I am acutely aware of the glare, any bit of dirt on the windshield only amplifies this. Still, it is really hard to see with the sun directly in your eyes.

That's for sure. Riding east that time of the day and year, I know that it's hard for drivers going north to look to their left and see me as I approach. A whole lot of squinting going on. I cut them a lot of slack and am on the lookout for them inadvertently pulling out in front of me. I dislike this scenario as a driver, too. Sunglasses help a bit.

Agree with your advice 100%.

But, I am reminded of a good line Brendan Kevenides posted here: "Looking and not seeing is not a defense; it is an indictment." <-something we should all remember, whether we are behind the wheel of a car or a bike.

So true. If you can't see you can't go. This morning about 7 am I had big glare heading east in a car. Until I could get my visor to a place where I could see I simply did not proceed.
